greetings, our 20 y.o female "ada" has begun to have howling episodes
for about 6 months now, and they are becoming very frequent. out of the
blue, day or night she starts howling loudly, sometimes going on for 20
seconds or so. today i watched her walk into a room corner and start
howling at the corner for no apparent reason. her howls are very deep
and somewhat creepy at 3 in the morning!
thanks for any input

Could be a sign of hyperthyroidsm, uremia (from kidney disease), hypertension
or cognitive disfunction. Have you taken her to vet recently and gotten her
blood tested?

Has she been drinking a lot?
I hope it's not kidney failure,..but that needs to be ruled out quickly by
the Vet.
My thoughts are with you and Ada.

Howling like that is one of the "standard behaviors" cats have.
The fact that it suddenly started means you should check for medical
problems.
I have a cat that has done that since maturity so it's normal for him.
Should one of my other cats start it, I'd take it to the vet.
(ESPECIALLY at 20 years of age. That's like, 110 years old for a person.)

I agree with everyone, please let your vet have a look at her. Does sound
like she is in some kind of distress. Could even be a rotting tooth.
Dental care is so important, we all know what tooth or mouth pain feels
like... and bad gums can lead to all kinds of other ailments... Anyway, not
meaning to be so wordy, just that I care and wish you and your little one
the best, and hopefully it can be cleared up fast, for both of you!
