Ours is starting to smell.    Nothing fecal or anything like that.   More like
it just needs a bath.   It is also shedding fir, which I assume is correlated
with the coming transition to spring weather.

I'm reluctant to try to bathe this thing - pure fear on my part...

Is this an outdoor cat?  If not (and you cat does not seem to have gotten
into something), this would be cause for concern.  *A cat should not have
odor* such as what you describe.  Holly is almost 11 years old and has never
been bathed except for one time immediately she was adopted -- and there is
no odor.  I recommend an immediate visit to the vet.  Incidentally, this
probably is not serious if my suspicions are correct.  That is, it sounds
like the anal glands may be impacted.  If so, that is easily (and quickly
and inexpensively) corrected by a vet, but it needs to be done ASAP because
this condition can be *very* uncomfortable for the cat.  You could learn to
express the glands yourself, but I do not recommend it because it is a very
unpleasant and smelly task.

It is an indoor-outdoor cat.

Can't imagine what it could have 'gotten into'.

The gland explanation rings true.
