As a public service, I'm informing you that Allergy Be Gone e-commerce
web site has bad return policies.  When ordering products online, it's
important to be able to return something when you can't see it. Even
worse, when the merchandise is defective and the company only credits
you cost less 10% restocking fee.  Why are they restocking defective
merchandise any way?  So I'm out the 10%, plus the shipping charges to
return said defective merchandise. And they won't reconsider, and it's
impossible to get someone in charge on the phone.

Buy from them if you want.  I won't. This is just a PSA.

A company once tried to do this to me when I bought a defective computer part
from them, I had to call visa and fax back a couple of papers, but I ended
up getting a full refund.  Online companies think they can make up their own
rules, but in reality - they can't.

Yep.  A good reason to always use a credit card.  If you are cheated, you
can always reverse the charges.  I like American Express for that.

You can't assume that.

Every credit card company has different policies regarding disputed
charges. Some offer no dispute resolution on international orders - have
a problem with something purchased from Canada and shipped to the US and
you are automatically screwed. Other policies I've seen in the fine
print extend protection only for in store purchases and mail order
purchases made in the State you reside in - not interstate mail order.
Another card only allows you to dispute charges made on the card within
a 100 mile radius from your residence. One card will allow you no
protection at all on damaged merchandise if you purchased the item in a
store - you have/had the option to "inspect the item in hand at time of
purchase."

Some credit card companies are better than others. A LOT better than
others. But don't assume you know what protection you may - or may not
have - just because you put a purchase on a credit card. In the end,
your State's Consumer Protection Laws will be the final arbiter
regarding what protection you have. (Along with that fine print in the
terms of your credit card agreement.) Don't be surprised with certain
credit cards, should you need to dispute a purchase, that you have to
file a complaint against the Credit Card company as well with your
State's Attorney General office.

Did you miss the part where I said I like American Express for that?  I can
reverse any charge I want any time, but don't take my word for that.  You
can certainly call American Express and ask them yourself.  By the way,
American Express is not a credit card.  As for regular credit cards, I don't
use them anymore.  I fired them all.

That used to be true, but there are now different types of AmEx cards,
some of which _are_ credit cards.

Yes, there is the blue card....but I distinctly said I don't use credit
cards, which would clearly indicate that I don't use the blue card.  The
rest of the cards, the green card, the gold card, the platinum card, or the
black card issued to businesses, are charge cards, not credit cards.

And the difference is . . . .  ?

If it's just a charge card, it must be paid in full each month, unlike a
standard credit card which lets you carry a balance from month to month
while paying interest.

Thanks, Mike.   I didn't know that.

The difference is that on a credit card, you can pay a monthly minimum.  On
a charge card, you have thirty days to pay the balance.

It wasn't, and still isn't, my intention to make a big deal of it, but
you simply said "By the way, American Express is not a credit card," so
I was just clarifying for anyone who might be confused.

Actually, mine's a Costco Platinum Cash Rebate card, and it's a credit
card.

I do believe that, if you want, you could call American Express and have
them treat your balance as a credit card--I think they call that extended
payments, or something like that.  Not something I want, though.

Write a letter to your credit card company (assuming that is how it was paid
for).  It usually has to be in writing.  The cc will usually remove the
charge from your credit card while they investigate your complaint.
