Do you think it's weird to call a female kitten Mars?

She's a tabby with white underneath and rusty bits all over.  She has this
really big round rusty spot on her back hence the name "Mars".  I also got
her around the time of the recent Mars landing.

Do you guys reckon a male name like "Mars" is weird?  I don't want her to be
teased by other cats when she gets older >;P

Opinions or ideas on other names would be appreciated.

A partial list of the names I have found in web comics featuring cat
characters is near the bottom of the page at
<http://www.maem.umr.edu/tdavis/cats/cat_comics.html>.  Sunny or
Sunnie suggest themselves if you think of the red spot a rising or
setting sun.

kittens tease each other, but it has nothing to do with their names.  I
think Mars is fine

You think that's odd? We've got acat called Crumbs! I think mars is a great
name,certainly more distinctive than Tiddles.

wouldn't a cat having a round rusty spot be more aptly called jupitor?

Another male name though.

Since she has a rising sun on her back, I'd call her Eos, the beautiful
Greek goddess of the Dawn.

I think Eos is greek god of Wind, not Dawn

No, there were four wind gods; Boreas, Zephyr, Notus, Eurus and the King
of Winds who was Aeolus.

Eos was certainly the dawn goddess, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eos

She was cursed with nymphomania which is a suitable warning for an
unspayed queen as well!

HEy, all my cats are named after characters in books or movies. I like their
names to mean something. If you like the name Mars I think you should keep
it. Very powerful.. god of war and all... :)

michevious babbeling child...? Yeah.. that's him... :)

I don't think it is strange.  We gave our cats names that we liked and
then once they developed their personallitys we gave them a middle name.
The strays we also gave names as quite a few never left out yard.  Here are
the names we gave our cats
Chardonney, Burgundy, Dakota, Sauvignon, Milkman, Aspen.
Apache, Cheyenne, Cherokee, MamaCat, PapaCat, Wishbone, Rapper, Gotee
All names fit them, some were female, some male... so Mars is a good name
if you like it and it fits for you.  Go with it.

Good a reason as any. My first cat was called Schroedinger (I read
physics) and the rest have been named after other prominent physicists;
so I have a Dirac, Heisenberg and a Newton so far.....
