We have a large green plastic water-bowl for the two furry fellas. I note
that the water does need changing regularly as a slime forms on the bottom
if not.
Anyhoo,..When Misty (5yo spayed male, indoor) wants a drink, he carefully
lowers one front-paw onto the surface of the water to gauge its depth. Our
other fella, Fatso (7+ spayed, outdoor/indoor) just sticks his head into the
bowl and starts lapping :-)

Our cat has this thing about tall glasses.   He'll go out of his way to drink
from one.

OTOH, our neighbor's cat prefers to drink from the bird bath.   My theory is
that the bird poop gives it a little extra flavor.

Yes,..I have seen similar behaviour with the same cat. He'll stick his head
into a watering can for a drink, even tho there's water in his bowl. Maybe
they are seeking sweeter water,..such as rain, especially with the bird bath
case?

My 1yr old cat does the same thing...we were wondering if she had a  depth
perception thing going on, where she couldn't tell if there was any water in
her dish w/o dipping her foot in first....

Maybe it's a case of washing its hands before eating.  When Samantha was a
kitten, she liked to splash.

Is she another breed other than your standard moggy? Maybe this behaviour is
breed related.

We have placed two glasses of water in different locations for our
ginger cat, she refuses to drink out of anything else.

On occasions she will pull at the glass with her paw or will dip her paw
into the glass to gauge the water level. Sometimes she will do a couple
of full 360 walk arounds before the paw is used but once she sees the
ripple in the surface, the head is in there.

It is so cute to watch
