Most experts agree that they should be fed kitten food for the first year,
with gradually increasing amounts as they develop.  Having said that, I tend
to make the transition to adult found at around 10 months.

the experts recommend at one year.  But they also recommend an entire can of
food for one meal.

If your cat is a larger breed, or is a mutt that looks like it will be big
boned, the year is a good idea - if not a bit longer.  Gauge by how your
cat's weight is.  If he looks like he is getting a little chubby, then
weaning on to adult food now would be ok.

A year? lol. When my youngest 2 came to live with my 2 adult cats they went
onto proper cat food when they were let out of the spare room to socialise
with my older pair at about 3 months old. It was just impossible to keep
them from eating each others food so I didn't bother trying and let them all
eat adult food. The 4 of them get a tin in the morning of soft food for
'breakfast' and then there is always some kibble and water for them to munch
though for the rest of the time as and when they want it.
