Hello,
I have often heard about clever cats, who could open doors by jumping on
handle, pee in toilet bowls, etc. I have two reasonably intelligent cats,
who, however, don't do anything out of the ordinary. They eat, sleep, play,
purr, chase small animals... but otherwise nothing to be bragging about.
What about yours ?

Opening doors with the paw round the bottom of the door and pulling,
(funnily enough our other cat 'learned' how to do this from her) the
same cat does the 'nodding thing' when it wants fed, it nods it head up
and down (like yes) to demand food. I taught it this, but for some
reason it remembered how to do this. (wonder why...)
However, the same cat last week got scolded by a magpie in the garden
and ran back into the house. I swear the cats face was red...cats do
know how to be embarrassed !

Of our 5 cats, only one is particularly clever. Mr. Bailey is a large
black and silver tabby, about 7 years old. From the day we brought him
home at age ~4 years, he has been able to open any cabinet door in the
house, and closes the door behind him. He also opens sliding closet
doors. We often find him curled up sound asleep in one of the cabinets he
has opened. He initiates and plays fetch like a dog, by bringing a
favorite toy for us to throw. When he wants a treat, he will knock the
container to the floor, then come and sit in front of us, looking
alternately at the container and then to us. When *he* thinks it's time
for bed, he will sit and stare at us for a moment, then make a trip toward
the bedroom, and repeat this as often as it takes until we respond.

Ours learnt to push sliding doors open,..they are on free runners and are
easy to move.If Fatty wants to go out, he tries to catch your gaze, then
gives a little meow and heads towards the font or back door, which ever is
closest. He often turns hishead to catch your gaze as he heads towards the
food bowl. If you are slow to react,..he'll start clawing the carpet and
shows his annoyance.
When he wants to come in,..he pulls at the flyscreen door causing a noise we
hear. He was a stray,..and perhaps he's had to hone these skills for self
survival once he's come across a friendly house.
Misty OTOH,..will open doors and come and stretch his paws onto you to tell
you he's hungery,..but that's about it.

Mine open closet doors, cabinet doors, and such.
One knocked over the canned cat food and was pawing it like he could open it
with his paw. If he could run the can opener, he would, I'm sure.

Both mine can open doors. One of them took to studying every lock, latch,
handle, knob and lever in the joint the moment I brought them home. She even
locks and unlocks the cat door so the other can't get in or out. She let
herself out of the cage at the vets office when she had to stay there for a
couple of days. They will also, sit and stay on command. One is a postal
inspector, must sniff the mail every time and the other is my forestry
agent, must sniff the logs as they go into the wood stove.

We used to have a cat that played hide and seek. We'd say "Marty, hide and
seek?" and she'd run to the back of the house and hide and then we'd go
through the house and say "where's Marty, where's Marty?" and once we got
close to where she was she'd jump out of her hiding place and scare you half
to death. She especially loved it if we'd scream and act real scared when
she jumped out.
