In interest in people food

My cat has a *new* and rather strong interest in people food and it is
starting to get out of hand. It has been bread lately, which is new and
weird I think. I have always kept my breads on top of the fridge with
no problem, but can't do it anymore because kitty cat will eat right
through the packaging! But kitty will eat - and tries to eat - ANY
people food.

I don't feed him people food - he 'steals' enough on his own. It is so
bad that I can't leave the kitchen for a second when cooking because
kitty will be all over the food in a second. There was even one very
embarassing instance where my cat actually snagged a chicken breast
right off the plate of a dinner guest!

I'll spray him with a squirt bottle as disapline. This worked really
well at first, but he hasn't been responding as well of late.

Does anyone have any advise for me? Is this just the nature of being a
proud pet owner?
Is there a better alternative to spraying with the squirt bottle?

  Lock the food away?

Try changing the cat food brand/flavor.

Do you free feed with dry food?
Does the cat like what you feed him?

Attend a Tupperware party and get some good food containers.
I hide my food in the microwave (and forget it there ...).

any new changes like this should be a call for seeing a vet.  It could be
any number of possibilities that is causing the cat to be excessively
hungry - like a thyroid condition.
