Hello.  Before I brought my first poinsettia home a few weeks ago I had been
avoiding them for years because I had heard they were toxic to cats.  I went
to many web sites last month and even on-line vets have said that poinsettias
are only mildly toxic to cats, if at all.  Tell that to my precious 6 year
old very healthy cat Jewel who died of kidney failure last night after
chewing on just a few poinsettia leaves.  My 11 year old daughter is heart
broken.  Please DO NOT TAKE THE RISK that your cat will only get a little
sick from poinsettias if he/she eats any part of the plant.  Hopefully this
prevents the same thing from happening to others, as there is a lot of
information out there that says poinsettias are fine, and THEY ARE NOT!!!

Indeed! They are listed as "low toxicity"
(http://www.cfainc.org/articles/plants.html), but enough of even a low
toxicity plant can still be fatal.

I am so very, very sorry for your loss.

Thanks for your condolences.  We are doing a little better now that Jewel is
laid to rest under the oak tree in the back yard.  I have chosen to consider
it a very hard lesson learned.  We will be going to the SPCA to choose a new
cat or kitten in a few days.

Dear Nancy:

I, too, send condolences from Xedo, Fray D, Fang, and their human
servant. I am glad to hear you will give a good home to another
purrball in need shortly.

BTW, Dieffenbachia AKA Dumb Cane, is also toxic to cats and dogs
alike. If you're not sure what this plant looks like, google it for
images. There's a lot of it around, and we don't want any.

Regards,

AJ

There are many plants that are toxic to cats.  Here are links to several
sites that list and/or discuss poisonous plants.

My initial reaction to the subject line was, "yeah, we know this", but
apparently we all don't.

Poinsettias ARE poisonous, as are a number of other plants.

I'm very protective of both my cat and my plants and they do not mix
well together.  She knows she's not supposed to mess with them, but
she often tries to.  I just had to stop her again.

I'm thinking of getting a bunch of cactus - that'll teach her.

Or it'll teach you: Cactus on the floor, soil all over the place LOL!
(I've had it).

I did know about various toxic plants and have never had them in the house
with our 5 cats.  The only plants I do have are not toxic and hang from the
ceiling where the cats can't get to them.

I have cactus, they use it to scratch their faces.

Our GP said, a child hat to go into hospital after biting into a
poinsettia leaf once or twice.

Oh, no. I am so sorry. Like you, I knew poisettias were toxic, but had
read them always listed as "low toxicity." There are many more plants
they claim are much more toxic than poinsettias, like lilies and such.
Thank you so much for posting your story so that others can be more
aware.
