I have fice of them and life seems to consist of mainly sleeping and eating.
I heard they need their sleep to grow new pad leather. I thought cats were
nocturnal - mine sleep all day and all night.

They might be bored.  Do they have toys?  Catnip? Do you play with them?

They are really more crepuscular than nocturnal, however, how active
they are and when they are active has a lot to do with how interesting
their lives are.  At least some of mine are active pretty much
whenever I am.  Several of them seem to spend much of the day outside
moving around.

Mine are most active when I'm at home with them.  We play together, have
meals together, watch TV together, the list is nearly endless.  Oh, and when
they get tired and it's late at night, they'll come out after a few minutes
(or an hour or so) and complain that I'm not in bed sleeping too!

I have one that loves to explore the back yard and another that follows me
from room to room.  He sleeps in every room I'm in, I might add.  I find
indoor cats sleep a lot more than outdoor cats.  I guess they're bored.

They are all outside cats.

Heh, yeah, right.  Of the two cats I have had these past 18 years (yup, 18
wonderful years!), one would go right out and check out the yard.  But as
soon as the door closed, or the front of the house was out of sight - ZOOM!
right back at the door again.  She'd stay out, so long as I was out with
her.  And even then, if I was more then a few dozen feet away, she'd come
charging back as fast as she could go.

The other one..  he wouldn't ever go out, unless you carried him, then he'd
run right back inside!!  He'd sit in the doorway, crane his neck around,
look at everything he wanted to see (all the while remaining right in the
doorway), then he'd go sit in the window and snooze.

"They're all outdoor cats", my sweet Aunt Petunia.
