Teaching My Cat Tricks

Hi again,

It's been a while since I've posted here, I got a Cat back around the
beginning of September. He's around 6-7mths now, anyway I want to teach
him some tricks. He knows what "want a treat" means, and he runs like a
bat out of hell when he hears his name... anyway, what's a good place to
learn to teach him tricks? I'm teaching him to sit right now, he's
horrible but it's his first time. What's this "clicker" I hear of?

Thanks.

Cats teach people. Apparently you are not fully trained yet or you
wouldn't be asking this question.

Cats are way too smart to be bothered with doing tricks. That's for
dogs.

My cats know a few tricks though:
Rub against my leg when it's time for dinner.
    Mooch when I am cooking.
Sit on my lap and watch TV.
Immediately use the litter box as soon as I reload it with
    fresh litter.
Help me wake up when the alarm goes off

That's a good trick.  Mine usually wakes me up before the alarm goes
off.

Yes, your cat is smarter than mine.  Mine wakes me up at least an hour
before it's time to get up.  She then lays on top of me and gets all comfy
for her own nap so that when it is really time for me to get up, I have to
wake her up.  She then proceeds to wait for me on top of the toilet so that
she can make sure I'm following the rest of my morning routine correctly.
She does this by sitting on the back of the toilet until I'm out of the
shower.  She then proceeds to sit on the floor by my vanity in my bedroom
until I'm done getting ready.  She then goes to the refrigerator to wait for
her "good bye" piece of turkey cold cuts.  But, everyone should know that
cats are above tricks.  They may humor you for a moment, but you could spend
years teaching it how to sit and it still won't do it.  They are above such
silliness.

Beth:

I know where you're coming from. My two realize that when I'm on the
loo they have a captive audience. Sheesh! Cats! What would we do
without them?

My cats favourite trick is wanting to get in and then deciding against it
or even running away. It will be repeated several times, preferably in cold
weather.
Another nice one is wanting to get out and then starting to meditate when I
open the door.
Good job I have a cat door.

Yes, well tricks have to be practiced. Our cats are just putting in the
time and effort to make usre we don't forget all the stuff they have
taught us :)

Angus comes in on his own and is perfectly happy until I go to shut the
door when he immediately remembers something very important he had to
do outside.

This girl Gabi actually has a very impressive show in a circus.
She prefers housecats from a farm and works with the whole litter.
She works with the strength of a cat (climbing, jumping, sitting, balancing)
and gently talks the cat into the wanted behaviour, goodies included.

Here's the site (in German).
But the pics are nice for everybody to look at:

He comes when he's called - WOW.  Tank will look at me, comtemplate what I'm
offering, and usually go back to what he's doing.   On the other hand, TIgger
has trained me quite well to give her treats when I first get up in the
morning.
