We have 5 cats ages 1 year to 13 years. We would like to improve the quality
of their diet. They currently eat both canned food and dry food, which I
would like to continue. They definitely prefer chunky canned food over
chopped or ground smooth food.
They will all need to eat the same foods, as we have no practical way to feed
them differently.
New choices of foods will need to be purchased at local stores like PetsMart
or Petco.
Given these requirements, what are the best foods you could recommend?
TIA

When we only had 2 cats they were being fed Pro-Plan dry food and Fancy
Feast canned food. Currently, with the 5 cats, we've dropped the quality
down a peg or two. They are eating 9-Lives dry and canned.
I've been considering Nutro or Nutro Max.

Those are considered to be quite good. Currently I'm feeding Nutro canned
and Wellness dry.
Mind you, if cats are doing well on a food, do we need to change? Though I
lean away from the 9-Lives types of food, cats have lived long and healthy
lives on these diets. The cat across the street has been eating 9-Lives
canned and Meow Mix dry for 16 years and she's still going strong. The pair
of cats who used to live next door lived to the age of 16 on a "no name"
brand of kibble and the cat of a friend from work ate the same stuff and
lived for 19 years.
Anyway, good luck with whatever you decided to do.

Thanks, Judy. Interesting information. We recently acquired a new puppy
as well and want to start him off on a "better" diet. I think we'll be
trying the Nutro foods for all our pets. Anything I can do to keep them in
their best health seems to be worth it.

Do give Nutro a try. If your four legged friends don't like it, there are
others of the same quality you can try.
Now if only people were as concerned about their diets as they are to the
diets of their four legged companions! :c)
Have a great weekend!

Hi Wayne - nice to see you here. :)
Believe it or not, Friskies has improved their formulations
significantly. If you Google "Phil P." and "Friskies" in
rec.pets.cats.health+behav you will find that Phil has posted a bunch
of info on it. I often purchase it for $0.25/6 oz can at the grocery
store and there are a number of "chunks in gravy" varieties.

Thanks -L, you as well.
I'll have to look at that. I haven't tried Friskies for years, so maybe
it's time. That's a great price, as well.

The Friskies that Phil P recommends are all Fancy Feast. They only come
in 3 oz cans and are quite expensive. Also, not all Fancy Feast
varieties are recommended by Phil. I use Wellness chicken which costs
about the same (per oz) as Fancy Feast.

It isn't Friskies that has improved its formula it is Fancy Feast.

What's wrong, Nancy? I disappeared for a couple days so you had to
hunt me down? f.cking freak.
Leave it to you, the human tapeworm, to come in a day late and dollar
short to dump sh.t on perfectly good information. Purina reformulated
both FF and Friskies. If you don't believe me, go Google the a.shole
you constantly suck (you know who I mean) along with the phrase
"Friskies" . He posted nutritional info about it months ago.
Now fly away, little hemorrhoid, fly away....
