Cat Forum / General Topics / December 2005Dry cat food that birds do not like needed !!!
Does anyone know of a good quality dry cat food that birds do not care for ?? It is winter in Michigan and I have had to stop feeding canned food because it freezes solid before they eat it. When I leave dry out the birds eat it as fast as I put it out - mainly blackbirds !!! I put suet blocks and sunflower seeds and regular bird seed and squirrel logs for the birds and squirrels but the blasted blackbirds can wipe out the dry food as fast as I put it out whether I hide it under an abandoned porch or whatever even though they have their own food. They seem to find it where ever. They make birdfood that squirrels do not like so it seems someone should be able to make dry cat food that birds do not like !! I would hate to have to stop feeding the cats when they need it the most. Just a couple notes. I do not live in the area I feed them plus I only drive during the day. Am in 60s and have trouble driving after dusk so usually I feed them mid day when roads are clear during winter and they are used to that and wait for me. I can not put special feeders or such out with food in them because of the area of town it is. They will steal ANYTHING that is not nailed down and then they may even. I know because I used to live there. Had an old dog house out a while back which was not very good shape and the morning after I put it out it disappeared. Why not just put the cat food bowls under an awning or other cover that hides it from the birds' eyes, or bring your cats indoors during the winter? You quote the whole damn thing and yet failed to get through the second paragraph. Blackbirds, being more intelligent than many humans, can find the food underneath an awning or abandoned porch. The cats are not anywhere near where the poster lives. Anyhow, I think the original post is taking the wrong tack here. SignatureChris Dukes Suspicion breeds confidence -- Brazil I don't think there is any dry food that birds will not eat (especially crows). Crows, however, are birds that are easily spooked. Could you set up those plastic pinwheels near the site (the kind you put in the ground) to scare them off? Don't know if these would be stolen. I do not begrudge any of the birds food and that is why I go through almost $300 a month on bird feed alone what with songbird food, sunflower seeds, suet blocks, regular wild bird food PLUS squirrel logs and other squirrel food!!!! I also do not begrudge them the dry cat food but when they go through 4 / 5 cups of dry in less then 10 minutes (I timed them once) then it is time to try and stop them. I never thought of getting the larger size food but now that you mention it I will. I have been feeding the outdoor cats Friskies feline favorites dry. Another suggestion given to me my a person that swears it works is to set a lawn ornament type owl in the vicinity of the food or where erer you want to keep the birds away. He swears that this works for him but they have to be very realistic looking. http://members.aol.com/larrystark/ I tryed the Friskies dental which is about the largest chunk dryed food I could find but the birds still went through it like nothing.
