I have definitely taken him tot he vet, he does not have fleas or any other
sign of skin irritation, blood workup was all normal and stool was negative
for parasites. We have tried a drop that is a Natural Homeopathic Remedy for
Anxiety, feliway (Pheromone Spray) and now the latest is the vet has put him
on 5 mg of Amitriptyline to try for two weeks. We just started this on Nov.
23. My cats are strictly indoor cats and our cattery is a closed cattery so
we never have outside cats in our home. This is his only real bizarre
behaviour. He started acting stressed after my first Oriental had to be
euthenized in April and now this has happened since my son went away to
college. We can always put a collar on him and that will stop him from
licking and chewing his hair but will make him more stressed out. All the
other cats are healthy and not showing any signs of doing the same thing
although since I first wrote this post he is now trying to chew off one of
the others cats hair as well. This really does seem like stress to me but my
son can't quit college to come home to take care of a stressed kitty and he
can't go to my son so I'm really looking for any suggestions to help this
poor animal get past this. I don't like the idea of drugging him but.........

It definitely sounds like stress if everything came back clean. Cats are
just like humans it effects both of our kinds in strange ways.
The collar might stop it on him doing it but now it he has started doing
this to another cat the collar won't stop that. I hate to say it he may
have to placed on a anti-behavior drug for a while. A lot of cats and dogs
develop bad behavioral problems and get placed on a variety of short terms
drugs with long term positive reactions. The current drug is a 2 week
long therapy make sure you watch the firball for any allergic or bad
reaction too the drug. If it works if might bee needed to be done for a
while to help the cat along.
I am not familiar with what drugs are used in anti behavioral problems
I also for got to ask what type of breed is the cat.?

He is a purbred Oriental, Typically a very playful breed, he was born and
raised in my home. I was going to keep him for my breeding program but his
eye shape is not as perfect as I would like and so decided to keep him as a
pet. I just fell in love with him when he was born. I will try the drugs and
hope that this works he is on 5 mg once a day for two weeks and then if that
does not work we will increase to 10mg per day. I do not want to cage him as
it really does take away from the whole pet idea and i don't want to add more
stress by putting a collar on him. We give him a lot of attention and he
sleeps with me since my son left. My husband is disabled so is home all day
with him. we have spent a lot on tests for this cat and with that aside we
just want to have a healthy, happy pet at the ned of the day.

My vet had suggested melatonin to help my stressed out cat. They sell the
pill over the counter in the USA. Ask your vet about it and how much you
would give. It will make the kitty a little sleepy but is supposed to calm
them down. People buy it as an alternative to sleeping pills and the such.
The body putts out melatonin before we go to sleep.
