New cat has arrived at last, a two year old female tuxedo. Micky whom we got
the playmate for originally is *not* amused at all!
After a while I realized that the hissing actually meant 'fear'. During
daytime I leave the door to the room where new pussy is open when I'm here,
otherwise it's closed. Micky does not go near the room at all, but female
can at least hear us. She sits either under the sofa or in her basket.
Last night I left the door open too. Micky sat exactly on the doorstep as if
he'd acknowledge the room as the other cat's. Female walked around, ate and
drank. She does not seem to mind Micky, she's rather afraid of the new
situation and very shy.
How long do you think it will take until Micky will be happy to have a
companion?
I realize too that it's definitely easier to get two cats together right
from the beginning.

it was different with each situation of bringing new kitties into our
home....
Bageera (female long hair calico/Persian mix RIP 2002 @ age 18) would
CRY.....and her feelings would get hurt...and she'd hide and sulk
meow/howl/cry till I could convince her she was still my baby too.
Rocket was the macho man...he had to be....he sprayed the mortgage....he had
alot to do around the house. And he made sure the others knew it was HIS
house....he'd puff his little chest out like...."go ahead...sniff
around...but it's ALL MINE....you can stay here but go near something of
mine that I want atm....and I'll fight". He was spoiled rotten...he knew
that he got his own plate at dinner...LOVED eating spaghetti with his paws
cause I'd cut it up small for him and knew the words "nap time" meant let's
go cuddle with mommy and daddy for the nite......on the pillow between them.
RIP little man--2000--heart defect
Susie-Anna was pretty friendly....like the pretty little girl that always
helped the new kids in school. We trained her to dance on her back feet
with bologna. *hehe* She loved it and we loved her. She would sing if she
thought there was any discord in the house. Also when she wanted her
"mamaw" up.....whatever time it was...she'd set near Mom's bedroom door and
"sing" which I miss now. AWOL since August---indoor cat....she probably got
out but I don't know how or when. God I miss her.
Our runt is Cheetah....he was and is the baby....and he's a SCAREDY CAT!!
Thunder/lightening.....hard rain....zoooom right to momma he comes.
Someone knocks on the door...........he's behind my legs like it's the
boogieman.
But he does like to help with the laundry.....he checks the machine's level
and when time he jumps down and shows me the open door of the dryer to put
the clothes. He's a clown and we love him. We hope he'll stay around with
us a LONG time!!!
Short story huh?
Each cat's different.....your mileage, and kitty litter brand, may vary
=^,,^=

"Boogieman" would be a good name for a cat too...
Micky wanted to help me fill in the tax forms yesterday, thankfully I could
convince him to go for a walk outside instead.
New cat has come out from under the sofa now and loves to sit on the window
sill. She's all cuddly and even accepted a bit of grooming with a brush.
And - she's got a name at last (this nearly caused a family split up!):
Minka.
Micky will be locked up with her this afternoon, but I give them the free
run of the house. Dog has been behaving very well so far except that she
stole some of the new cat's food :-)
I can tell you this is quite an adventure bringing in a new cat into the
household!

It depends.
For some its only a few days.
For others a good month.
Just keep re-assuring Micky and make sure they see you showing affection
to the other one. That you accept the new cat, but that you arent going
to forget Micky
With my newest, my oldest got really timid and would hide so I made sure
I get her extra TLC.
In the end it will be fine no doubt. They just need to get used to each
other and set their boundries

Things didn't seem to get going at all today, then an hour ago the children
came and reported that the two cats are lying beside each other on the
sofa!
Minka (new cat) was even allowed to have the pillow,
what a gentleman Micky is!
After only two days I can report success: It came so quickly now!
I spent a lot of time talking to Minka yesterday and stroking her today,
and Micky caught a mouse outside, this might have
built up his battered ego again...
Dog couldn't care less but took advantage and stole the cat food that I had
left under the sofa for the new cat three times so far.

It varies from cat to cat. Some take to the new comer right away. Others can
take a few weeks. We have one that took several months.
