Hello Everyone
We have a 6 mo. old female kitten that does not shut up.  She even
seems to talk to herself.  She was always yappy but it increased after
she was spayed.  I should point out that she is an indoor cat that only
gets outside if one of us is with her or sometimes by herself for a
short period on a harness with a long leash and tied to something so
she doesn't wander away.  I don't know if its "that time of year" but
we have had quite a few male cats wandering through the property and
one even visited her on the other side of a window on Halloween.  Is
this normal behavior?  Is it teen angst?  None of the people I know are
sure if spaying just stops the ability to procreate but leaves the
hormones intact or if other hormones come into play anyway causing our
meow-fest.  Sometime we can figure out what she wants and other times
it makes no sense.  We do give her attention and play with her as she
is a very loved cat.  We just don't get it!  Any insight would be
appreciated as all this meowing is giving us a headache.
Thanks

spaying should include the removal of the uterus and the ovaries.. no way
they could 'procreate'.  and just so you know, an unspayed female cat can go
into heat as young as six months, and it is dangerous for her to get
pregnant this young - think 10 yr old human getting pregnant.

Yes, cats in heat are VERY vocal - and just so you know, there is no 'time
of year' cats can go into heat several times in one year, and left intact
and on her own could get pregnant three times in one year.  Just because she
is vocal though does not mean she is in heat.  She will stick her back end
up in the air, and roll around a lot looking like she is uncomfortable.  Its
not pretty, its not nice for her to suffer with it.  Get her spayed.

She is. And she wants *aouuuuuuuut*. Easiest way to tell if your cat is
in heat is the amount of visitors goes way up (and they will camp out, too)

The cat was spayed, she got more vocal after the spay. It's in the first few
sentences.

Try getting her a buddy two cats aren't any more trouble then one and it will
give her company, however they will gang up on you ;-}

One of my cats is very vocal anytime he is alone. Fortunately, he
considers the other cats to be suitable company so he's quiet most of the
time at home. But put him in the cat carrier or in a room by himself and
he will holler and holler and holler.

That's actually the reason I noticed him at the shelter. He was making so
much noise and would only shut up when someone was paying attention to
him.

He's not siamese, but he has the long lean oriental body-type -- and the
voice -- so maybe there's siamese somewhere in his ancestry.

I'm not sure if the meowing has to do with hormones,
but I do know that it takes a while for the hormone household to settle
after spaying.

About the noisiness if the cat: I know the feeling. Our Micky has got
himself the nickname 'Miau'.
Spray her with water at night.

My spayed kitty is very vocal, especially when she wants tuna mixed with her
dry food.  She paws at me and meows when she wants attention.  She does it
all the time.  It's probably just in your cat's personality to be vocal.  My
cat was spayed as early as it is safe to do so.  I think it was at 6 months
old.  She's always been vocal.

We have had many cats over the years and several siamese ones.  If she is in
heat well there's not much to do but get her fixed and wait until it
"takes."  If she's already fixed what we always did is whenever they yowled
we would tap very lightly on the nose (NOT hit just tap) and say NO very
firmly.  After a while you will have a cat that opens their mouth and just a
little quiet noise will come out.  It has never failed for us.  If you go
and pick them up and play with them when they yowl it just reinforces the
behavior that this gets them attention.

You're the kind of person that pinches your nose when you sneeze, aren't
you.
