my cat has been having little owies on the side of his face.  they look like
cysts, and then they pop.  my husband and i thought he had been shot by a bb
gun or a pellet gun, but we couldnt find a bullet.  the same thing happened
to him last year but it was on his tailbone area.  are they abcesses?  should
i take him to the vet?  they have been oozing pus and blood.  although it
seems dried up now.  now there is caked on blood on his face.  what is it and
what do i do about it?

I would take him to the vet just in order to understand what it is and find
out what the best treatment for it is if it occurs again.  There is probably
nothing they would do right now, but it's better to be prepared for another
occurrence, since he's had it more than once.

Is that a medical term?

I would take the cat to the vet to have it looked at.  I would point
out on Monday
some kids were arrested for shooting trick or treaters with BB guns.
One of them
hit a kid, he will have to have it monitored for the rest of his life.
It stopped an
inch from his heart, can not be removed sugically.   It will be there
forever.

If the injury was due to a cat-fight,..there would be a small puncture wound
from the other cat's claw. In the old stray fella we look after, he had one
of these with the same symptoms you have described i.e. infection with
swelling, pus, blood and a clear fluid called 'lymph-fluid'. The latter is
due to the body's lymph system responding to an injury.

The main point is tho, the original injury (a small hole) gets grossly
dilated and is very obvious. If you can't see the injury,..they maybe
infected hair-follicle ulcers,..a bit like large pimples or boils. In either
case, he will need medical attention. A clean-up of the effected area
followed by aggressive anti-biotic treatment was successful in our fella's
case.

Regardless of HOW your cat got the injuries, you should really take him
to a vet.  Abcesses can kill cats, as they somehow poison the
bloodstream.  I NEVER hesitate to take my cat to the vet anytime he has
some type of oozy thing going on.  I hope your kitty is okay!  Give it
a scritch for me!

One of my cats used to get sores on his face that would start tiny
(pinhead) then burst open to be about the size of a thumbnail with
blood/pus coming out. We were never completely sure what caused them
but the best guess was grass seeds which get stuck in their fur then
burrow into the skin and cause an infection. We managed to put one dose
of antiseptic on it before he objected, ran away and returned a few
days later almost completely healed. He only got them 3 times and after
the first experience we just left the treatment to him!

I think my original post to this newsgroup concerned a cat who had
that... turned out they were puncture wounds from other cats' claws;
characterized by a tiny red dot in the middle.

Just thought I'd let you guys know about my cat...we cleaned it with peroxide
and then put triple antibiotic ointment on it, and now hes ok....he has been
really good...he just lays there and lets us do our thing.  he knows hes
getting healed i guess...anyway, hes ok now and we are just waiting for his
hair to grow back....thanks for all your posts!!  later

I'm so glad to hear that!  It's amazing how they know when we're helping
them.  We had 3 young kitties who all came down with severe cases of
ringworm.  They don't normally like to be bathed, but they were so good
during their bath treatments, and didn't resist us giving them the oral
medications.  I felt they just had to somehow know they were being helped.
