Hello everyone!
My partner and I are going on vacation in a couple of months - for a total of
three (3) weeks. We have two cats.
The male is 1 1/2 years old, an indoor-outdoor cat, who was neutered four
months ago. The female kitten is 4 months approx. and we try to keep her
indoors. Both have not been left alone for more than 2 days.
What care do you suggest for the three-week abscence? (I'm trying to get my
neighbor to take care of them.) The cats really like each other and I don't
want to separate them nor really put them in a kennel. (Especially the male
indoor-outdoor will go bonkers in a cage.)
Would appreciate your advice - especially if you have knowledge of Puerto
Rico cat care (where we currently live.)
Look forward to hearing from you!

Well, I don't know about Puerto Rico, but I went on a trip for three
weeks and left my one cat at my apartment but I had a friend come and stay
here. She had to leave to go out of town for my last 4 days so I had it set
up so she could take her to my vet's office. They do boarding services
there. My vet has someone come in and play with the boarded animals and has
large cage areas for them with beds and litter boxes in there. They also
let them out to roam in the office during the day. I'd check to see if your
vet has something like that. I wouldn't want to board mine with a kennel,
but I trust my vet and have seen how they interact with the boarded animals.
Otherwise, get a person to come stay with them for at least every other
night if you can. Cats are better with being alone than say dogs, but for
such a long absence, I know they'd like to have company for a whole night
every day or two. When my friend was here for all but four days, my cat
started sleeping with her and everything. When I got home, she was glued to
me for weeks. They're going to miss you and they need some consistent
interaction. For things like weekend trips, they're fine. But that's a
long time to be gone.

<snip>
you should get a "house sitter"
that's what we did when we recently took a one week vaction...
all was fine and our cat was very calm and happy when we returned

Indeed. You would just need to pay someone to show for perhaps an
hour or two in the morning and then again in the evening to let him in
and out of the home, to also give the cat plenty of fresh food and
water and a bit of TLC. I'm sure there would be plenty of youngish
people who would be glad of the extra cash. It is also a great way to
prevent would be burglars from thinking they can rob you while on
vacation. If they know someone is there, then they won't bother.

I am also going away soon for a vacation. I am having my daughter come stay
here with the cats. It sets my mind at ease and I know my cats will be
better off.

Hi Jessica
I have left my cats alone for as long as two weeks
I wasn't happy about it and fretted constantly but they are happier in their
home alone than in a kennel
Get someone to check on them and to freshen up their water........I leave a
big bag of crunchies in the middle of the floor and rip a tiny hole in
it......gives them something to do to combat bordem
I let mine come and go with the pet door and they seem quite content
Once again, get a friend just to pop in and check on them, that way you can
phone your friend and get an update once in a while.
If you can afford a small vacation why not offer your neighbor a couple of
dollars.........it is cheaper than a kennel!
