Hi everyone,
I would really appreciate your advice on the following.
My barely four-month old kitten is in her first heat cycle. (She has not yet
been spayed, because I wanted the first cycle to come & go.) Now, my neutered
male (1 1/2 years old) is displaying sexual behaviour - mounting her whenever
he gets a chance.
1. My female kitten can't get pregnant, can she? (Male cat was neutered four
months ago.)
2. I suppose I ought to discourage this mounting/sexual behaviour? (Please
confirm and/or give me your thoughts.)
Many thanks.
Of course, I will have my "Queenie" spayed ASAP - preferably once cycle is
over (I hope it doesn't last three weeks!)

mounting isn't always a sexual response. It can be a dominance issue as
well. a "ha ha, Im the alpha cat" kind of thing. I tend to discourage it.
You might want to contact your vet and see if they can neuter while she is
in heat. Most vets will. Its dogs that cause an issue when they are in
heat.

No, unless she escapes outside.

No, let them sort out things by their natural behaviour - they know rightly
how to do things.
: Many thanks.

Spaying a cat while in heat will cost you more money and make recovery
time last longer, as well. I think your vet will tell you this when
you ask them. It's best to wait out her cycle, only for the above
mentioned facts. If she's an exclusively indoor kitty, then you have
nothing to worry about in the pregnancy department. Just make sure she
doesn't escape! Give your kitties little pets for me!

We were having trouble with our neutered male mounting our spayed
female...turned out that the vet hadn't done a complete job on him.
Also had that happen with another male cat, although we were told that
it's unusual. You may want to take your male kitty into the vet and
have him checked out, just to be sure.

Thanks for the advice, but I hope you're wrong... Another weird thing is that
I thought my female kitty would be in haet for a couple of weeks and now a
few days later, she seems to have gotten over the cycle. Can this be???

This is not unusual and don't be concerned about it. I once had a small
neutered poodle that would often try to mount the cats.
