I have my bed near my window, and my cat always sleeps by my pillow, at
random times during the night I'll wake up and he'll just be swatting
the strings that dangle from my shades to close/open them. I'm just
curious what goes on in a brain that makes them want to do this, it
seems so pointless.

*** Watching him play with a crumbled up ball of paper right now and
ignoring the box of toys I've bought him.

Hey men are easy to figure out ;-)  just don't ask us how you look in the
dress unless you want an honest opinion and us to sleep on the couch :-)

Oh ... erm ... are you a MAN!?
I don't know why, but I took you for a woman up to now <giggle>.
I mean there was no hint from you so far and the name doesn't give away much
either :-)

Once I have algebra, trigonometry and calculus down pat, I may attempt to
figure them out.

It MOVES!!

My light goes on in the middle of the night because it can be switched on by
a string...
Good job I remembered to take that string off when I went away for a week,
otherwise the light would have been on all the time, or worst case: the
house could have been on fire because that lamp is a bit old and spooky.

It's an innate play response. Nothing surprising or amazing.
