Thanks for the past replies everyone!
After weeks of sneezing, several trips to the vet, antibiotics, usenet
posts, arguments with trolls who act concerned about animals but show
their true colors when private emails are considered, and more
sneezing, I asked my vet about antihistamine, as a responder mentioned.
The vet said she gives her cat half of an over-the-counter
antihistamine every day during allergy season and that I should try
that. I wonder how many visits she was going to try to get in before
letting me in on that one but I can't blame her as I would have hated
to have to answer the question "what color and texture is the stuff he
sneezes" with anything other than "nothing comes out."
Back to the point, the antihistamines worked, allergy season is almost
over and kitty is off of the drugs and only sneezes once every few days
now.
On the biting topic, letting kitty sink his teeth in to a
blanket-covered hand when he feels frisky has helped greatly! He does
not bite bare skin anymore and has become much more touchy-feely; he
now sleeps on laps for hours daily. Through all the solutions
mentioned, spraying, nose-flicking, tapping, yelling, ignoring, and any
others I might have forgotten didn't work, but a 5-minute blanket
wrestle holds him over for a good week!
Now if only I could understand why he has decided that it is
appropriate to take the little spongy balls that he plays fetch with to
his water dish, let them soak for a minute, and then return to the bed
with them and drop them... I don't mind waking up and tossing a ball,
but waking up and grabbing a ball only to have what I pray is water
drip all over the place is not what I would consider happy (he still
happily fetches it). Many other things end up in the water bowl as
well, and when presented with fresh water, he chooses to drink the
older water. I suppose this beats his older habit of burying
everything in his litter box for a day!

wasn't me, but usually e-mail is for personal correspondence, not
newsgroup stuff unless you see a "contact me off-list about this" sort
of thing.

even better.

Might be just me, but I'd write that one off as eccentric. Moving the
dish or getting him a new one might change it but probably not. Maybe
he thinks you're dehydrated in the morning.

I was thinking it was a great practical joke.. and what a good sense of
humor he has. But I do remember reading something recently that cats like
to put their toys in the food or water because its a 'home base' sort of
thing. Its pretty typical and common apparently.

That's interesting...
One if my cats, Maxi, likes to keep a AA
battery in his food bowl. If I remove it, as
soon as someone leaves a dead AA
battery lying around (rather than throwing
it immediately in the trash), it quickly ends
up in his food bowl. We jokingly call him
"Electro-Maxi" :)

Ours is crazy for drinking straws and stick pens. You leave a pen lying around
and it's *gone*.

Mine too! I have an ink stain on the carpet to prove it!

Does he keep a "stash"? :)

Haven't found one yet. Seems to hide them here and there instead - more likely,
just drops them here and there when it's attention turns to something else, like
a nice juicy spider...

Aren't they the funniest little things? I tried a rolled up towel in
front of the fridge because Angus kept losing his toys under it. I
thought he would be pleased but nope, pulled it away in 2 secs. The
next day I came home and he'd buried his food dish under the towel.
I've also *never* seen him drink from his water bowl. He occasionally
has a quick lap from the toilet but favourite is the bottom of the
shower just after I get out.

Perhaps cats have something going on
in their heads about water faucets...
I'm trying to think of one of mine that
dosen't attack any faucet accidently left
dripping, like it contained cat mana from
heaven.
Ot is it possible waterbowles make the
water less attractive to them?

Big Butchie likes to jump on my lap when I'm
sitting at the computer, to demand his due
attention. If my response is inadequate he
will use his mouth to try and pull a pen or
other such object off the desk onto the floor.
If the mission is successful, he then jumps to
the floor, commenting with a "raaa...," then
swaggers away...
In any case, who needs pest control when
one has cats... eh? <g>

I thought a couple of those miniature remote controlled
cars would be a hoot with my cats. But my male siamese,
Replay, just picks them up by the antenna and dumps them
into the water bowl. Doesn't even try to play with them,
just picks them up immediately and drowns them. And of
course this ruins them.
Sigh.

The neighbor's cat ignores the water bowl we have on the patio and drinks out of
the bird bath (about 10 feet away). My initial reaction was that the bird
droppings give the water a little flavor.... but now that I'm thinking about it,
maybe after water stands for awhile whatever chemicals that were added to it for
public health reasons evaporate. When I kept tropical fish as a kid, the
word was that before adding water to a tank, it had to sit for a couple of days
- for that reason.

I keep a large water bowl for my outside cats,
but several prefer to drink out of the spa, which
is chlorinated. Occasionally, one will slip and
fall in-- though it's very easy for them to get out--
they get real indignant afterwards... lol
On the other hand, the inside guys come
a-running when I replace their water-- it seems
they like it when is has a slight chlorinated smell.
Weird. eh?

First, I gotta say that my cry-meow sound at my cat is the only thing that
got her to not bite at skin! She knows it hurts now! Mine also likes to
attack my feet and do a little blanket covered foot/hand wrestling from time
to time. Congrats on that being all it took! But, on the topic of the ball
in the water dish....my cat does that with her food dish! She has a little
yellow beanie baby type toy that she STOLE from my bed one day and claimed
as her own. The poor thing used to have clothes and hair...not anymore :)
She drops it in her food dish and eats around it. It cracks me up. Then
she picks it up and continues to play. She never puts it in her water
fountain but she used to put it beside her water bowl before I got her the
fountain. At least she doesn't try to bathe the poor little yellow guy.

My cat loves rubber bands. She will walk around the house with it in
her mouth and toss it into the air. She always drops them in her water
bowl, My kitten likes the new feather toy I bought for my older cat.
He claimed it for his own. He pulls the feathers off and drops them
into his water dish. He also likes to cover his food with the placemat
under th bowl.
