About a week ago one of our cats, who was formerly hardly interested
in going outside, began staying out all the time. At first it would
come back and spend the night in the house, but now it merely comes in
to eat, and then begins to meow until we let it go back out.
We have two cats, who are brothers from the same litter. We have a pet
door, and the cats have been free to go in and out as they please,
except in bad weather. Generally they are in by 10:00 PM and locked
down until early the next morning.
Has anyone else experienced this sudden refusal of a cat to come in
the house?

I wanted to ask the same.
Unneutered cats tend to take off when they're about 6 mths old.

well males do, females just hang around and pop out kittens.

Both the cats were neutured right away when they were young.
The cats are 6 years old.

Mine used to do that when he'd caught something big (adult rabbit or
something) and he'd stay by it until it was consumed entirely. Sometimes 3
days or more.
What is he doing when he's out?
Norbert Fortener - 20 Oct 2005 22:43 GMT
Ratootie;
Seems unlikely he would have killed anything. Prior to this
he was defintely the one that stayed in the house, and he certainly
didn't seem to be much of a hunter.
The behavior has been going on for week.
We we're not really sure where he goes, which is part of the
worry. Occasionally he hangs around the yard, but usually he's not to
be seen. He does not come in wt if it has been raining.

Indeed, even if I let my cat goof around I'd want to know where she i
sand what she is up to. Ask around in your neighborhood if he visits
any homes. It is possible he has found playmates feline or human. Do
you play with him or do you just feed him and then let him be?

Put a collar with his address on him, just in case someone else fancies him.

We did indeed do that very thing - write our phone number on his
collar.

then he's probably found something interesting to do. You could ask
around, maybe somebody else has taken him in.

I wouldn't call it "refusal", but ours disappears for much of the day every day.
My wife's at home almost all day every day, so she knows. It'll hang around
her when she's out in the yard, but the rest of the time it just seems to
disappear, only to come in the garage sometime between 7 and 10 pm every nite -
at which time we go into lock down mode.
I don't think it's eating prey when it's gone because every often it comes up
with a dead bird or rodent and all it does is play with the carcass - sometimes
for a few days.

Both my cats are bummed out because of the changing climate and shorter
days. They know winter is coming. Their in/out behavior changes with the
seasons. Right now, one stays indoors all day and stays out all night, while
the other stays out all day. In the summer they would come in only to eat
and sleep from 6 am to noon. Locking them down doesn't work here. The one
knows how to unlock the cat door. So far in the year and a half that I've
had them, they have stayed within a short distance from the house. I'm in
the forest so they know there are things out there that can get them.

Could be. We asked around the neighborhood, but so far with no
results.
