Am I the only one whose cat flops over on her back with her front paws
touching over on one side, head turned to the same side, and back legs
flopped all the way open to sleep? It looks strangely contorted to me...but
whatever floats her boat, I guess :) She sleeps like that all the time if
she's on the floor. If she's on a bed or the back of the couch she's
usually on her tummy, but when she's sleeping near me, sometimes even on the
couch cushions, she's in the above mentioned position. Sometimes her little
front paws are up in the air a little and flopped over at the first joint
instead of being to the side. Strange :)

George does that, esp. in warm weather. He lays on his back with paws at
various odd angles. The first few times I saw that pose I had to go over to
him and check that he was still alive.

We refer to it as "the dead kitty pose". Both of ours do that all the time.

Very good name for it! My Butterscotch is doing it right now, by the way :)

Only two of my four do this. Boof is 9 months old and still does the kitten
sleep thing. Smokey is two and sleeps like this on the bed at night time, so
I can rub her tummy lots and lots. Phil and Lil don't do it.

Yep, that's it! But, it looks like my kitty is more on her back whereas this
little doll is sort of on the side. Guess it's very common :)

LOL! Angus does that all the time too. Both totally on his back, paws
flopping, or top half twisted over to one side. I have some great
photos. He will often do it if he wants his tummy rubbed as well. He
rolls over then eyes me meaningfullly until I get the message.

Heh... cute picture... my Rajah does the same thing... it's hard not
to go over and try to rub his belly... not something he cares for.. he's
a tooth kitty.. and always ready to strike.
Here's a cute picture I grabbed when he was a kitten...
Fits the "dead kitty pose" to a t...

It's very common if the cat is totally relaxed and at ease with you. They
(like all animals) have a strong instinct to protect vulnerable areas such
as their tummies. Our house cat will do it while lying in the warm sun near
our windows which go down to floor level. Its quite cute to watch.
Sometimes they do this when they are feeling playful,..tho if I tickle their
tummy, the result can be a claw-retracted swot,..followed by a little more
serious one if I dont get the message!

Yeah, I've heard that about them being at ease. That makes me happy :)
Yeah, I know what you mean about the swat attack. I just got one! :)

When our Buffy does it (often) we call her "Otter". Two of her best
captured poses, one as an "adult" and one as a kitten in her favorite wooden
table top sleeping box (decor, to us)

Wow, kittens sure are flexible, aren't they! She's beautiful.

Yes, she is beautiful! We have a tuxedo named Peanut that sleeps on his
back most of the time, his front paws folded on his chest and back paws
straight up in the air, toes bent. Alas, I haven't gotten a picture of
that.
We have another tuxedo, Popie, who took over my dough bowl for sleeping
from the first night she was with us as a kitten. She still sleeps there.
I've posted this picture before, but here it is once again...
