My mother-in-law recently took 2 of her 10 cats to vet because ears were
dirty and figured they had ear mites. Well the vet said they had a yeast
infection and cleaned them and treated them.
I had never heard of this and was wondering if anyone else had this problem
before.

Our Basho developed a yeast infection in one ear a few years back. It
had to be cleaned with a special solution every day, and medication
poured in afterwards. This went on for about a week if I recall correctly.

I don't know what it is, maybe yeast infection, maybe mites (more likely),
but all 6 of the cats are scratching their ears. And not just like someone
would play with her hair, like they were digging for something.

I have a cat that used to have a chronic yeast infection of the ears.
It's not uncommon and is often mistaken for mites. Your vet no doubt
took a swab and checked it under a microscope which is the best to to
diagnose yeast. My vet prescribed a ten day treatment with Otomax
ointment which contains an anti-yeast medicine, an anti-bacterial
medicine because yeast infections can leave the ears susceptible to
secondary bacterial infections and an anti-inflammatory to reduce the
itch and discomfort. The problem was that yeast spores are pervasive in
the environment and if your cat is susceptible as mine was, it will just
get reinfected over and over again. The solution was an acidic otic
cleanser (ear wash) which used frequently makes the ear too acid for
yeast to grow. Same principal as a vinegar douche to prevent vaginal
yeast infections. I cleaned my cat's ears weekly with this cleanser and
it prevented reinfection. Eventually she seemed to developed a natural
resistance to yeast and after about 12 years of this, I'm down to once
or twice a year ear cleaning. Whenever a brown gunk starts to form in
her ears, I know it's time to clean them. Holding her down and squirting
liquid into her ears is not her favorite thing nor mine, usually
resulting in a lot of bad language by both of us and significant lost of
blood on my part, but it's better then a trip to the vet.

Subject: Re: Trying to keep my dog's ears dry and free of infection
Who is this supposed "puppy wizard"
I wouldn't trust anything they print.
LIKE THIS:
"It is NO WONDER that the marked changes in
deviant behavior of children can be achieved
through brief, simple educative routines with
their mothers which modify the mother's social
behaviors shaping the child (Whaler, 1966). Some
clinics have reported ELIMINATION ofthe need for
child THERAPY through changing the clinical emphasis
from clinical to parental HANDLING of the child
(Szrynski 1965).
A large number of cases improved sufficiently after
preliminary contact with parents that NO treatment
of children was required, and almost ALL cases
SHOWE a remarkably shortened period for therapy.
Quite severe cases of anorexia nervosa have been
treated in own to five months by simply REPLACING
the parents temporarily with EFFUSIVELY LOVING
SUBSTITUTES (Groen, 1966)."
"Despite Skinner's clear denunciation of "negative
reinforcement" (1958) NEARLY EVER LEARNING
THEORY model involves the USE OF PUNISHMENT.
Of curse, Skinner has never to my knowledge,
demonstrated HOWE we escape the phenomenon
that an expected reward not received is experienced
as a punishment and can produce extensive and
persistent aggression (Azrin et al, 1966)."
ALL Temperament and Behavior Problems
And 90% Of DIS-EASE
Are CAUSED BY MISHANDLING.
THAT'S GOOD!
THAT MEANS We can CURE ALL
Temperament And Behavior Problems
And 90% Of DIS-EASE
NEARLY INSTANTLY
Simply By DOING EXXXACTLY, PRECISELY, OPPOSITE
Of HOWE We've Been TAUGHT
By UNIVERSITY TRAINED Behaviorists
