JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A teenager skateboarding with friends was fatally
struck by a driver who swerved to avoid a cat in the road, police said.

Kevin Rivers, 17, of Jacksonville, was standing by the side of the road with
his skateboard Saturday night when he was struck by a Toyota Solara, police
said.

He was later pronounced dead at a hospital, according to police.

The driver, whose name was not released, told police the car swerved to
avoid a cat in the road.

Investigators said the driver would not be charged because Rivers had been
standing partially in the road when he was struck.

"I'm devastated. He was too young," Rivers' mother, Naomi Falson, told
WJXT-TV in Jacksonville. "He was a good boy. He wanted something in life."

What a horrible thing to have happen.

Cars and roads have to be the greatest danger for pets. If they regularly
cross the road, it seems only a matter of time for many.

As a car driver, if I see an animal on the road (and it's usually dogs), I
make a quick appraisal of the situation ie is there someone close behind, is
there oncoming traffic or any other potential hazards. Most times, I just
slow to a stop or just a crawl so the animal can get past. Refrain from
using the car's horn, as the animal may reverse direction, meaning the whole
thing will be repeated later.

On some occasions, especially on highways, you can't do much to avoid a
collision with wild-life etc without jeapodising other cars around you. You
might be able to make a small deviation.

Somehow I doubt it.   As someone who was badly injured by soemone
on a skateboard I would bet that the skateboarder was recklessly
skakeboarding between pedestrians/cars/etc.   You show me
someone who claims they are a safe skateboarder and i'll show you
someone who is lying.

I can count on zero fingers the number of skateboarders who haven't
crashed into pedestrians, collided with cars, or ran into bikes.

Every skateboarder i've come accross if they hit you on the sidewalk
they complain becuase you had the nerve to be walking on their
sidewalk.   Never mind that skateoarding on the sidewalk is dangerous
and illegal.

Probably more like weaving in and out between cars.
