Do you really think it's a bad move? I mean sure I'd like little children to
be able to pet cats or whatever animals. When I lived in Florida the
mosquito population was great so I'd guess greater now and with the
hurricanes. At least close them temporarily.

I live in Florida also Alt4 you will find that almost all of them have
closed down Was it west Nile that got all those people sick I know it was
passed on thru the petting zoo that was at central Florida fairgrounds
during fair time. They found that the goats ( which passed it on to the
people ) and several others animals had not had their shots or had their
checkup. It was only that one zoo that had the problems and I remember it
got blown out of control thru the media; how many times has that happened -*
don't start a flame war -*. Now they all have closed due to high insurance
cost.
The mosquito pop is down here out in Miss., LA, and Texas with all the free
standing water you will see a mostiquto growth over there. Only 4 reported
cases of West Nile compared to last year of 36 the weather is starting to
change bring on those cooler days.
I was just making a point they had a great petting and traveling zoo at the
Volusia county fairgrounds quite a few animals for the kids to see now
both went out of business. I remember when you walked out of the area you
had no choice but to clean your hands big old signs telling you the dangers
of animal contact and how to prevent problems

Around here a number of factors combined to put petting zoos out of
business:
1. High cost of insurance (if they can get it at all.)
2. High taxes.
3. High cost of adverstising.
4. High cost of fuel. (all of them are outside of the city.)
5. Attendees being bitten/scratched/get ill/etc.
6. Animal rights groups protesting they're existance. If PETA had
their way there would be no zoos of any kind.

I can understand the fear of the animal causing disease the did have one
petting zoo that actually introduces the children to different species of
animals sort of a field trip zoo they went out of business due to insurance
cost

Sometimes PETA can do good things sometimes they need to step back sometimes
not this case though just through the years I have seen PETA do some very
stupid moves
