What does it mean when a cat raises his paw and taps you with it?

I've seen my cat, and other cats, do this to both humans and other cats.
He kind of raises his paw and taps me face with it, what's it mean?

The cats seem to do it to each other when they want to play or get the
other one to move out of the way. My youngest taps my knee when he's
hungry. If I'm brushing Pookie and stop before she's had enough she'll tap
me on the hand to get me to continue. Max taps me on the face sometimes in
the morning to say "get out of bed you lazy human!"

Good answer.  Cats learn from experience; and when they do that, we humans
react with more attention because we perceive it as being cute.   Hence, a
habit is formed--and a nice one, too.

I have a couple of insiders who picked it up, and they make good use of it.

My one does it to me 3 / 4 times a night and when I raise up to look she jumps on my
pillow and waits to "snuzzle" then after a cople minutes of this she goes back to her bed.
The first few times she did this to me it scared the crap out of me!!  When you are
supposed to be alone and someone taps you on the shoulder at night it is enough to give a
person a heart attack!!

My cat shreds my knee when she's hungry.

Mine does it when she wants attention.  Sometimes it means she wants food,
sometimes she wants attention, and sometimes she just seems to want to tap
me because after she does it, she goes away :)  Whatever the case, it's only
behind the "mushing" thing they do with paws in the cuteness factor.

My boy cat does this. I think he's trying to get my attention so he
can get even more pets.
