I have used several types - I find the scissor type easier to use.
However, I also find that I need two different sizes/styles of those:
one, intended for dogs, for the large cats, and another pair no larger
than a pair of nail scissors for the dainty claws of the small cats.
The small pair is too weak for the largest claws and the blades spring
apart; the larger ones are too big to work with on small paws. I use
only the small pair on the 5-7 pound cats, either on the 7-10 pound
cats, and only the large on the biggest.
Both pair have the brand name "Four Paws" on them, but I think the
packages were labeled "Safari". A Google search on
"four paws" "claw clipper" cat OR dog
will turn up pictures and sources.
When I used guillotine type clippers, I always felt that I really
needed a helper to hold the cat so I could approach the paws from the
front - scissor types work well from the side.

Just use human nail clippers......get a friend to help you
someone can hold the kitty or wrap a towel around the cat and gently squish
the paw so the nail sticks out
the other person can chop off the tips of the nails, just be careful not to
cut the pink part

When it comes to nail clippers, it's best to use ones that are designed for
cat claws. Human nail clippers crush and split.
