Aggressive Feral Cat

My pet cat James lives outside and  is getting attacked by a stray cat
roaming around the neighborhood.  I cannot keep him inside because I am gone
for weeks at a time and he is then fed by my neighbor.  He has been neutered,
but this roaming cat is twice his size and attacks him at every opportunity...
some kind of territory war going on.  I live in Spain, and there is no animal
control service here to call, and I am getting to my wits end.  My cat will
come limping home with open bit wounds on his legs, and then its another trip
to the vets followed by antibiotics for a week and wound tending.  Any ideas
would be greatly appreciated.

Trap the feral one, drive out 10-20 miles, and leave him in another
location far away. :)

That is cold hearted   take a stray drop him of somewhere and make it
another person's problem

1  keep the cat inside give the neighbor a key to go in to take care of the
cat or  hire a cat sitter service to this

2 make a fence that prevents the cat from getting out or any other from
getting in  get your neighbor to come over and    feed the cat ( this is a
last resort  but in the US there are so many sue happy idiots it is becoming
where you have to do this)

3  is their a vet that can keep your firball while you are a way or a
neighbor that can do this for you

4 Trap the aggressive one  have the cat neutered  you might have a new
friend  and should knock the problem off
worse comes to worse and the cat is way too aggressive a local animal
shelter is a choice that may be need to be made

5  if the fence is not agreeable    get a very large cage  and when you are
away put the cat in it at your neighbor's house sounds terrible but  better
than the cat dying from wounds recieved

I am suggesting solving a definite problem rather than worrying about
hypotheticals. OP's problem comes from special circumstances: small
cat, being away a lot. It is not clear if another neighborhood will
have an identical problem.

Thanks for those quick suggestions...The trap and neuter idea sound positive.
I don't like the idea of just dumping the roaming cat (although when it comes
to his survival or my cat's survival I will choose my cat).  I will now start
to look for plans for a trap - some kind of cage affair with a swinging door
perhaps.  Will post a result if I get one.  Thanks again.

Call your vet they should help

IF you can't arm your cat with a weapon (so he can defend himself from
the predatory bully cat) you have a few options.  You can move your cat
or move the other cat.  If you are gone for weeks at a time, you then
must face that you need to have your cat indoors while you are away. If
that's not possible (by paying your neighbor to house your cat) then
you need to think about rehoming the feral cat. If you can't move your
cat or move the other cat, then you can get someone to watch over the
cats. Other than that, I am out of ideas.

Since you keep your cat outside, is he neutered (as not to impregnate
females and bring more kittens (who won'tt have homes) into this world?
Is your cat vaccinated (so that he won't contract rabies or worse)?

Yes, my cat is neutered and has all shots up to date.  I rigged a trap out of
a clothes hamper last night and "something" took the bacon out I was using
for bait, but I did not catch him!  I am going to ask the vet if he has a
proper trap I can borrow or rent.  I have been keeping my cat inside while
the last bite wound is healing, but he is climbing the walls ready to get
back outside to freedom.  Obviously I have to catch the other one first...
