Hello,
I have a neutered male cat with long hair. He sometimes (often!) comes home
smelling terrible. I tried to determine the origin of the smell, and well,
it comes from his behind... Does it mean that he doesn't clean himself well
enough or could it be some other problem ? And is there any way I could
cover/wash this smell ?

Sometimes cats get messy motions which foul their rear coat. If his motions
continue to be too loose, a change to another food may help.
Cats are not prolific water drinkers, and as a result, tend to have dry
stools. He may be suffring from an illness if the problem continues
regardless of food variation.
Best o luck

One my kittens occasionally did that. I believe it happened whenever
she got scared.
Is there any way you could wash the cat you ask? Hell yeah! You
mean you havent washed him each time when he shat himself?

To be very specific, my cat didn't appear to have soiled himself with feces.
It smell more like piss... I think that maybe drops stay in his (long) fur,
but then it seems other cats would clean themselves. I have another cat
(short hair) which never smells.
I have tried just now to put some butter close to his rear so that he licks
himself. Maybe he's just a not very clean cat ???...
Any other info ?

It could also be anal gland secretions getting caught in the long fur.
That's a really foul smell.
Possibly trimming the long fur under the tail a little would help.

Thanks 5cats,
I think you have the answer, the smell doesn't seem to be urine so it must
be what you suggest.
Now, is there any other solution than trimming the fur (Réglisse (that's his
name) might not be thoroughly pleased) ?

If the smell is as a result of anal gland secretions, trimming the fur is
NOT the solution.
Call your vet and ask. If the smell is from the anal glands, the vet can fix
this.

The smell is from what he's eating, giving him a better quality food at
home should help.
Really soft stinky poop or diarrhea could be a sign of worms or other
intestinal parisites. In that case, get him to a vet for test &
treatment.

I have a long hair Persian that we have to trim her rear end or she has the
same problem till I met this cat I thought all cats were clean. The cat
belongs to my elderly mother and when she smells she gets trimmed and a good
bath--which she hates the cat not my mom well her too :-).
I had another short hair balck cat that when he go neutered refused to clean
his rear we got our revenge wipe his but with vaseline and forced him to
clean himself. He learned the hard way clean himself or get something that
makes his instincts take over
By the way anone ever seen a cat with vaseline on their fur worse than a dog
with peanut butter ROFLMAO
