Our male stray has been fighting again, and he appaears to have an injured
rear toe.  The toes claw appears to be missing and there is a small amount
of bleeding which seems to have mostly stopped.

Its 4am here. He keeps licking it and I was wondering at this stage whether
Betadine (a common anti-septic treatment for small wounds on humans) is a
good idea.

thks for any replies,..Jason

I'd pour on some 3% hydrogen peroxide--a safe antiseptic. In the AM,
you'll want to take him to the vet ASAP--he could get a terrible
infection.

Thanks, but I dont have any peroxide. I'll be taking him as soon as the Vet
is available, and its a Sunday. Who needs money anyway? He's not that bad, I
just hate this fighting thing. Usually its a piece of fur,..but this time I
suspect he cut his rear toe on some windscreen glass fragments out on the
bitumen road where they were having it out.

He's seems happy ATM,..having a kip.

Managed to get a little squirt of Betadine into the effected area. He didn't
lick it cause it probably tastes so yuk.

The Vet decided it was not an emergency and booked him in for tomorrow
morning. I examined the wound more closely. The claw is still there, but its
at an odd angle and only semi-retracted. There is a fair bit of fur missing
around the area plus half one adjacent toe! A cat bite for sure.

These cats come over the road to him to fight, and he reacts. Will try to
slowly program him into staying inside at night I think. He's too old and
chubby to keep this caper up.

For those interested,..the actual injury was confined to his claw being
partially ripped from the oval shaped bed that the claw grows from. The Vet
just pulled gently to remove the loose claw and gave him a check over, some
shots which were due ( we now formally own him so to speak) and antibiotic
tabs: Clavulox 50mg twice a day. Of course the Vet expertly popped one over
his tongue while doing a special hold on his rear jaw to hold the mouth
open. I'll be mincing up some raw chicken and mixing the ground-up tab in
this.

Glad to hear the boy will be okay! It sounds as though spending nights
indoors would, indeed, be a good thing.

Amen! He actually goes back and sits near the front where the other cat
comes over,...I've got news for him,..it's over.

Thks for the antiseptic tip.

My vet has sold me a 'pill popper' one of those things that is a long
plastic tube with a bit of blue rubber on the end that is split in half and
you put the pill in it, take a firm hold of the aforementioned beautiful
feline and shove down its throat and kind of inject the pill down it's
throat.
sounds like you have a little beauty - enjoy

Jason:

Always keep a bottle of hydrogen peroxide around to disinfect. It
doesn't sting.

Another thing you can always do is make an icepack, wrap it in a
towel, and apply to the affected area. It will alleviate any swelling
and may help a bit with any pain. This works for humans, too.
