I put them in 2 categories - those that can be manipulated without
human intervention and those that do not require that.

Requires human intervention:

1:  feather attached to string attached to stick.
2:  laser pointer

Requires no intervention:

1: live crickets
2: bottle caps - for some reason, my cat loves these things.  Most of
them are metallic beer caps, but plastic water-bottle caps seem to be
almost as good - the best thing is they are free.

There was a cricket death in my home tonite - it didn't last long, but
I could tell she really enjoyed it while it lasted.  Coincidentally, I
also noticed the crickets in the pet store tonite - they're not meant
as cat toys, but they're cheap and I think I may buy a few next time
I'm there.

The wobble-ball thing is also okay, although it gets annoying because
it requires batteries and tends to start banging itself against walls.

Any other good toys anyone reccomends?

I have something called a Feline Frolic. It consists of a 5"x5"
plastic mouse (silly looking thing). The base takes three AA
batteries. It also has a plastic wand thing that you attach to the top
of it that has a little furry mouse at the end. You also get a remote
(two more batteries). You turn on the base and the wand begins jerking
back and forth at random. If you like, you can use the remote to race
the thing over the carpet. My two cats both like it, but my girl kit
is obsessed. She sleeps next to it even when it's not turned on. If I
set it up on the coffee table, she'll pull it down so as to keep it
handy. Greatest $27 I ever spent on them!

You can find these at www.sharperimage.com

Mine loves the laser pointer!!! It's now part of her weight management
routine.  She also stole what I have come to call her "little yellow guy"
from me.  It's  small stuffed animal kind of thing but it's more like a
beany baby.  She throws it and chews on it and brings it to me to throw for
her to chase.  Little bits of paper are also a favorite.  She tends to not
play with actual cat toys I buy, so I've stopped buying them.

I took a bunch of plastic grocery store shopping bags and formed them
into a tightly packed ball about the size of a tennis ball, and my cat
loves to play with it and lick it.

1. the little stuffed cloth bags scented with catnip. I put all the cat
toys on a low shelf when I vacumm and those are what gets pulled off and
played with first.

2. ping pong balls. Lot of fun to chase, especially in the (dry) bathtub.

3. milk jug rings - one of my past cats kept carrying them  into the
bedroom and stashed a hoard of them under the bed. Current cats aren't as
fascinated with them unless I toss them around for them to chase.
