Friend has two cats now - one diabetic, the other young and playful.
She thinks that getting a third cat would divert the attention of the
playful one away from the sickly one, plus be there as a cat-friend
when the diabetic one eventually dies.  Some have advised her against
this, telling her to wait til the sick one dies.  What do all you cat
people say?

I'm actually for her getting the 3rd cat NOW, bec. I have ano. friend
who has to get rid of a cat (long story) and I'd LOVE to make the
adoption connection.

thanks for your opinions.

I would recommend getting a *kitten* now - introducing kittens into a
multicat household is less stressful than introducing an adult.

I actually was where you are now.  Emerald - my eldest - diabetic and a
heart condition.  Got a kitten on the condition that if Em didnt take to it
that he would go back.  Well she tolerated him well enough but from time to
time he did get on her nerves.  (technically em is a male cat - but that is
a LONG story)  Ended up fostering when kitten (ollie) was 3 or 4.  Fell in
love with cat #3 (jack) and adopted him.  Then a year later fell in love
with 4, 5, and 6 (lost #6) then almost two years later adopted new #6.

I have been very fortunate that they all get along wonderfully.  Ollie has
his grumpy days, but on the whole I have a great cat colony here.

However, if the friend considers the diabetic cat sickly may I highly
recommend she check out http://www.felinediabetes.com/.  My Em has been
living with it for many years now, and you would never know she is diabetic
or arthritic.. with the help of some cosequin
