Weird, A weekender (tourist) was at one of the cabins near mine and their
Labrador Retriever ran over and jumped up on me, presumably to say "Hi
there". Well, one of my cats (Gretchen) ran up and clawed the dog in the
rump and the dog turned around to look at Gretchen and the cat was Humped
up, growling, at this time Emily came up behind the dog and when the dog
turned around to sniff her, Emily clawed the dog in the nose and Gretchen
got her in the butt again. The dog ran away and I had to go over there and
have the owner check out the dog and watch it to see if it got infected. Dog
was tied up but got out of it's collar. Needless to say, I no longer have
doubts as to weather or not they are able to hold their own against a dog.

Don't be so sure of that. Sounds like that dog wasn't very aggressive,
wasn't looking to fight. Let's see how your two cats do against a
pitbull or Doberman.

Oh, I'm aware of the fact that if that dog did want a fight, it could kill
the cats. Fortunately, I've not seen any really aggressive dogs visiting up
here. What I worry about are the ones that want to play who are so big that
they could hurt the cats just by playing. Like the Saint Bernard that visits
down the road. Big old gruff teddy bear, but just too damn big. The cats
stay away form dogs for the most part. Perhaps they sense that it wasn't
hostile and were telling it to get lost and hopefully they'd have the good
sense to avoid an aggressive one. But, I have seen dogs team up and kill a
cat. Got it's head in it's mouth and shook it breaking the cats neck and
crushing it's skull.
