what kind of carpet for cats?

to use on 2x4 as a 'ladder' to climb to shelf...
It's going to be about a 5 ft. climb straight up.
Is shag or medium shag or close cropped carpet

I think I'd wrap the post with sisal rope - 3/8 inch, maybe.  A 4x4
post would be better, or a 2x6.
