I have a diabetic cat who has been getting 2 shots a day for 8 years. He has
always been getting the humulin insulin but the pharmacist mentioned using
Novolin which seems to be much cheaper. My vet said it is ok to switch but I am
still a little nervous because my cat has done reasonably well on the Humulin.
Does anybody have any info or opinions on the Novolin insulin? Is it any
different at all then the Humulin?
Thanks for any help

They all work well, some patients react better to different kinds of
insulin. Follow the directions carefully, some insulin works
instantly, some work over a 24 hour period.

I have tow diabetic cats. One is on Humaulin U (Ultra Lente). The other
one bovine PZI. There are many time of Humulin insulin (humilog, R, N, U,
L, Lantis (given in order of duration with Lantus being longest. Cats
metabolize insulin about twice as fast as humans so cats usually need two
shots a day. If you switch insulin you should start with 1 unit twice
daily and test blood glucose levels at home using human meter to ensure that
you are not giving too much or not enough insulin. Too much is very bad
since it can kill fast ((diabetic coma). Come over to the feline diabetic
message board (just enter FDMB in search engine.).

Humans use multiple shots to control their BG very well. A treatment is a
long lasting basal insulin one a day and a fast acting insulin such as
Humalog with each meal. One could do something similar with cats and there
are people who inject there cats 3 or four times a day but that is rare.

But that isn't what the first poster implied. His implicication was
that humans only needed to use one shot a day.
