box no problem but lately in the past couple weeks he has been doing #2
outside his box and around the house. He's never done this before..its like
he's confused or something i'm told.Nothing has changed in his life(no extra

The cat is very old and I guess its beginning to become senile. I also had a
old cat beginning to do so, and I never managed to make it stop doing it.
It can also be that the cat is sick, take him to the vet to check him out.

Best regards

First what do you mean by he goes outside the box ???  I have one that when she poops she
gets her butt so close to the edge of the box that her mess usually ends up outside the
box.  Then I have one that when she was a kitten would not go in the box if it was used by
the other and not cleaned whether it was pee or poop.  She is getting better as she gets
older but at times she still will do her job outside the box if it has not been cleaned
since the other one used it and usually she does it when no one is home and right in front
of the outside entrance door and guess what happens when someone come home ?!?!

The thing is that when I ask my ex  about the litter box being cleaned she always says she
keeps it cleaned but if I go there it looks at times like it has not been cleaned it 3 / 4
days but yet she wonders why they go on the floor at times.  I try to tell them it needs
to be cleaned AT LEAST twice a day if not more where she has 2 cats there.  They (The
humans) pass right by the one in mud room by back door when they come and go but yet DO
NOT HAVE TIME to scoup it or they use the bath where the second one is but can not scoup
it while setting on the john !!!!  Lot of people complain but when it comes down to it
they do not keep the box as clean as it should be or they do not have enough boxes.

There is an article in the current issue of Cat Fancy magazine that reccommends that the
litter box be 1 and a half times the lenght of the cat using it to make sure the cat has
room to comfortably use it.  I have seen some of the boxes in stores that are so small you
wonder how any cat could use it!!  Plus watch to see if the cats will scratch in their
litter.  If they will not they most likely do not like the litter hence they may not use
it.  Or the litter box itself could be dirty / smelly.  Lot of people do not realize that
the plastic of the litter box can hold smell after a while and needs to be replaced every
so ofter.  Empty the litter and stick your nose in the box and take a whiff and see what
you smell!!

At 17, is it harder for him to get into his litter box? I know he gets
in for #1, but might it be more difficult for #2 for some reason? I'm
wondering if a litter box ramp would help?

My old cat got so unsteady on his feet that he needed to lean his rump
on the side of the little box. Then pee over the side. I bought a
great big plastic trunk in Walmart and used its lid to catch the over
flow. Had to keep dumping and flushing out the lid, but the poor old
guy only had a few more weeks left anyway, and I was glad to do it.

very active for his age.

I have 2 litter pans of which 1 is a doggie pan I believe.  At least I have always found
them in the dog section.  I got mine at the local Tractor Supply store.  The pans are a
lot bigger in area and one side is half as high as the other sides.  I got it when I first
took my furbabies in at like 6 / 7 months and the lower side helped them get in and out
after their surgeries for nuetering and spaying and I just kept on using it because of
it's size and I have a regular large sized kitty box also.  My older Kitty at 14 years
prefers the doggie pan with the lower side.
