Hi,

I have had several cats for years when i lived with my parents in a
house. I moved away and have lived for 1 1/2 yearsin and appartment,
and would like to know your opinions and experiences with cats living
in appartments.
I have always thought that cats need a yard, trees, etc. but talking
with a friend that has a cat in her apartment she insists that if you
had them since small age there they get accustomed.
I'm a little curious, i have always wanted to have a cat, but I don't
want to have a pet if he's not really happy.

Any thoughts ?

I got a kitten from a pet store, and have kept her in an apartment for
most of the past 9 years.  It's all she's known, so she adapted to it
as it was certainly preferable to living inside a wire cage in a pet
store.  When we lived in a house I would let her out in the enclosed
back yard area with me watching her, she would not walk in the grass,
but loved to roll around on the concrete.

Do yourself a favor, buiy a house if you can.

Become your own landlord.  Decide for yourself
whether you can have a pet.

Around here my house has a mortgage of
$700, a tiny studio apartment is $1,000.
(large US city.)

I've had too many morons over the years who
never ever should have become landlords.

Yes cats can adapt to apartments.   But the
question is can the landlord?  Often no they can't.

My cat was born in my apartment and has lived in one all of her life.  She
has no desire to go outside.  The dog goes outside and sometimes I will leave
the door open as I put the dog out.  My cat will patiently wait for me to
come inside.  Sure she stands there and sniffs the air, but honestly she
shows no real interest in it.  She loves her toys and for some reason loves
to watch the toilet flush.   Heaven forbid you shut the lid as you flush.
She feaks and digs like crazy on it.  It's the funniest thing.  I think she
is perfectly happy indoors and I think most would be as long as they have
enough amusement inside and space to roam.

If you offer lots of toys, cat trees, etc. - stuff to keep their minds
occupied - they can be perfectly content. My older cat follows me to the
door and occasionally peeks out, but I'm convinced she's just wondering
where I'm going, as she always greets me at the door when I get home.

Cat trees and scratching posts are especially important in an apartment
because it gives the cat something to scratch on that's yours, thus avoiding
damage to the apartment and your security deposit.

Cats can live well and happily in apartments. But it would be better to have
two together, and they need a cat tree and a daily play time.

I second that.  I have 4 and even though the younger ones bully Kitty the 12 year old one
and chase her she is the first one to come see what is wrong when I do their nails, ears,
etc. and they start crying and if she does not see them when she comes out to eat or
whatever she has to look where ever she knows they usually sleep or hangout.

Even though she gets picked on my them she would be lost without them.  I would never have
just one.

We put up bird feeders outside the apartment windows, hours of entertain
ment for two indoor cats.

I took in a stray cat that was about 4 years old and pregnant and let her stay in the
garage and have her kittens.  We did not let any of them out.  Over the course of time she
got kind of used to us from us feeding and playing with her babies.

After the kittens were eating on their own and using the litter tray and big enough to
find homes for we had her splayed and would let her out occasionaly but she looked at our
garage as her home after being there with her babies and always came back there.  We did
not use it for car but storage (Junk).  We started taking her in the house but letting her
out or in the garage when she wanted to.  Eventualy she started going out less and less
and now at 11 / 12 years has no interest in going out and has not even tried to get out.
I have her with me now in my second floor apartment and she sets in the windows and looks
out but mostly lays around.  Even when I take her to vet she fights to not go out the
door.  She was my first baby and I would be lost without her.  Even now the thought of her
living on the streets for all those years bothers me.  I thank God we found her.

Oh my goodness!! You're Margie looks like she could be related to my
Butterscotch! The only real difference is that my Butter Baby has more black
on her face!  I put her on the showyourpets.com site.  You can take a look
if you like :)
http://www.showyourpets.com/cats1.htm  She's the second one on the page and
is also the on the "cover" of the site's homepage :)  Don't you just love
their coloring!

Love them all.  Merva looks like she is ready to take a bite out of someone.

The only thing though ---  Doggie wallpaper for a cat page ??  :-)

Hi--we live in a small 2 bedroom apt, and have 3 cats (all strays).
Two are strictly indoor, the other is indoor/outdoor.  All 3 seem to be
happy--we've got lots of window sill padded ledges, and 2 cat trees
positioned in front of a large window so they can look out.  We give
all lots of love--they seem to be happy.
