I have decided to get Candy (8 weeks) a playmate - another girl to keep
her company. I am looking hard to find one the same age as her right
now but if I can't, is it better to get an older kitten (18 weeks) or
wait for a younger one ensuring she remains the oldest? Will it make a
blind bit of difference?

No difference at all.
Aren't there any littermates?
I would get a kitten soon because the little one must feel pretty lonely. 18
weeks is no problem. Just get the new one wormed too.
