We'd like to take a week or two off this fall.
The no-brainier would seem tb to leave our garage door open about 8 inches, lock
the door from the garage to the inside of the house, have the cat's bed, food,
and water (already there...) in the garage; and have my son-in-law look in to
check food/water on the way home from work every day.
The fly in the ointment is the neighbor's cat, which seems to have some sort of
eating disorder. It's been getting fatter and fatter for about a year now. Nice
cat, but with a bottomless appetite.
When the garage door is open, it will go in there and eat everything in sight,
nonstop. Even when our cat's bowl is empty, it will rush in and lick the bowl
to get any crumbs. Consequently, we have to manage the location of our cat's
food/water depending on whether the neighbor's cat has access to the garage.
SO: can anybody think of a workaround short of boarding our cat somewhere else?

If this was an ongoing problem, you could check to see if something
called the nekofeeder might help. Just google for it, I saw it in a
posting not long ago and got a kick out of it.

DUH ---------------
Leave litter box, food and water in garage or house with cat and leave garage door CLOSED.

Per whayface:
>Leave litter box, food and water in garage or house with cat and leave garage door CLOSED.
I should have noted up front that this is unacceptable to the wife.

Fat cats cant jump.
Train your lean cat to get up on a high table or something.

You can install an electronic pet door with a magnetic latch that
admits only the animal wearing the collar that releases the catch.
They are available from several pet door companies including
