I have a pair of 4-year-old sister tabbies, Tiger and Shiloh. They both
tend to be a bit "robust," so I feed them Iams dry for weight control.
They each get 2 ounces twice daily.
Shiloh is a voracious eater and finishes her bowl. Tiger, though, often
only finishes around half a serving. She looks great, and her behavior
hasn't changed. But I'm concerned that she's not eating enough.
Do you think I'm being overly concerned? I'd love to hear from other
cat lovers about this.
Thank you,
Joe

I think you're feeding them too much. That's why they're not losing weight.
Moderately active, neutered adult cats need about 45 kcal/kg/day.
Iams Weight Control contains 346 kcal/cup (1815 kcal/lb-113 kcal/oz). You're
feeding them 453 kcal/day (113 kcal x 4 oz) when you should be feeding them
214 kcal/day and 265 kcal/day, respectively.

Hi Joe
I leave two kinds of dry food in dispensers out all the time for my two cats
and feed them each half a 3oz can of wet food twice a day. They can eat what
they like of the dry food and both will leave a little of the 1½ oz's they
get of the wet stuff. Both cats have maintained their weight in the year
that I've had them. One at 10 lbs and the other at 9¾ lbs over the past
year. The dry stuff I leave out for them is, Flint River Ranch dry and Meow
Mix Hairball formula.

First of all I love the name Shiloh, I had my Shiloh for 16 years or so.
Second, I would be more concerned about Shiloh eating too much, is it
possible that she has something that is making her so hungry. Has she been
spayed, is not is there any chance that she is pregnant?
Third, If Tiger is not getting to thin then Tiger is just responding to her
body telling her that she has had enough.
She probably is just not as hungry as Shiloh.
If you have any concerns that she is getting too thin or that Shiloh might
have something else going on then take them to the vet.

Phil, Gary, Karin --
Thanks for responding. I appreciate the help.
Karin, both Shiloh and Tiger were spayed as kittens before I adopted
them from the shelter. Tiger's weight seems stable, so she probably is
just responding to her body saying she's had enough.
(By the way, how did you pick the name Shiloh? I took mine from the
title of a Neil Diamond song, believe it or not.) I'm taking Shiloh to
the vet tomorrow for a check-up, so I'll ask him about her
weight/eating habits.
Thanks again,
Joe
