Dry Food on the Floor

I am constantly picking up dry food that falls out of the cat bowl and
onto the floor.  Does anyone know of a bowl designed to help keep the
dry food off the floor? I am forever throwing away food that falls on
the floor.  And am I the only one with messy cats - or is this a common
problem?

Dry food that falls on the floor here is picked up and put back in the bowl.
But then again it doesn't happen often.

Is the bowl so small or so deep that the cat can't get to the food easily?

Thanks for your reply!  My cats eat out of standard-sized, lower
dishes. Maybe they just happen to be messier than most?!  ((>^..^<))

One of our cats bowl is huge so that helps but our other cat eats out of a
small bowl but is very delicate in the way she eats.

My calico always gets alot of her food on the floor.   I've never
figured out why. Part of the reason is she has a "smushed" face
which seems to make hard for her to get food out of the dish.
Therefore the dish can't be "deep."

I've always wondered why this happens.  After all this is food that
is not moving.   If she were living out in the wild the food would be
moving and trying to run away.

I've got 3 cats who are really sloppy eaters--floor would be covered
with dry food.  Now I put the food in large soup bowls that we don't
use anymore.  I think they like the stoneware bowls better---and there
is not quite as much food on the floor.--Becky

I have a cat that picks the food out of the bowl and eats next to it dropping
quite a bit in the process. I bought one of those mats with the upturned
edges (like what you put under a dishdrain) and now I can simply pick it up
and let the food slide right back in the bowl.

I feel cats like large bowls better because it doesn't disturb their
whiskers.
To the OP: Probably these cats would like their food served in bowls on
saucers ;-)
But some plastic board with a little edge should do the trick too. I use
those from underneath the dish racks which I don't need anyway.
They are very useful for many things.

Mine seems to prefer a dessert size plate, or a wide and very shallow
bowl. I guess this helps her in separating the gravy to be licked off
leaving meat cubes behind. :-)

#1 of 6 likes to throw her food on the floor to eat it.  Will take large
mouth fulls out of the bowl, put it on the floor and eats it from there.
I don't pick up food from the floor, someone will eat it (but then again, I
have six and a couple of them are scrounges)

Another answer is to try a bowl that turns inward at the top... I have used
candy and dip dishes that I have found at yard sales.  This shape is helpful
in keeping the food in the dish.... I don't think it would help for those
cats who put their food on the floor to eat it.  For the soft food, I use
little plates, almost completely flat, some have a litte bit of a rim at the
edge....

Good luck!

I want to thank all of you for your wonderful suggestions!  You've
given me many great ideas on how to solve my dilemma. Thanks so much!
This is a great board.

I had a dog that did that.  Only he would carry the
mouthful of food into the living room and dump it onto
the carpet to eat.

My ex's Furball prefers to eat off the floor after playing with his food.  He will pull
some out of the dish with his paw then bat it around on the floor for a bit before eating
it.  I do not worry about it and just let him.  I see no reason why you should worry about
then eating food off the floor.
