My stepdaughters cat has been pooping outside his box for six months she
says. He'll pee in it but has started pooping in another corner. They have
same box & litter and had him for 6 years. They are thinking of getting rid
of him because of it. I hate that so I told her I'd ask for any tips.
Thanks!

Either: the cat is not well and needs to see a vet, bring a stool sample.
Or: try and put a second litter box into the poop corner.

Just to get rid of a cat that one has owned for 6 years is a *very* cheap
solution.
Will they do that with mommy too when she gets old ...?
Sorry, but I can't help thinking this.

Evidently the cat means nothing to them if they are willing to get rid of it instead of
working on solving the problem.  First thing I would do is take it to a vet to see if
there are other underlying problems.

Maybe it would be better if they did find a ewally loving home for it if that is all it
takes for them to get rid of it!!!

I totally agree with you on the not caring enough. And my stepdaugher (16)
says he even lays on her stomach while she reads. None of my cats is that
affectionate & they get TONS of love. If I didn't have 6 already, I'd take
him.

They are going to try putting the box in the poop corner. They did work with
him to lose weight, but I don't think the mom has ever cared for it. And she
has a dog that she adores, even telling her daughter some times that "Tippy
is a good girl, but (daughter) is a bad girl" Might be kidding, but it
really hurts her feelings. How can you love one animal so much & not care
about another?!? Maybe he's rebelling about the change in food?? Thanks for
your advice so far!

Sometimes cats are finicky and just want a different litterbox to do each
job in.
Yes, the cat should see a vet - worms can make #2 painful and cause the cat
to associate the litterbox with pain. Getting him checked out to be sure
he's healthy is a necessary step.
