Nooo, one of my kitties does that regularly. He tries to catch his tail
around the back of the chair and holds his breath while doubled over doing
it until he had a coughing fit. Quite diconcerting at first but he seems
none the worse for wear for his idiocy.

My calico is doing this on the back of my office chair right now... I find
that it hinders my concentration.... I need to get her a scratching post,
but can you guys tell me... candidly... do you think the scratching post is
going to keep my cat from performing gymnastics on my chair?  It's an
upholstered chair, and expensive, and eventually it is going to succumb to
her attacks.

Yes.

I was hoping some of our furniture wouldn't....but it's clearly starting to.

Now I've got to figure out how to habituate our animal to some sort of
scratching post.

I'm thinking half of a wooden barrel - cut lengthwise.   Stable enough so it
won't be pulled over.... maybe cover part of it with some old carpeting for
tactile variety.

But how to get the animal to use it?

Annoiting it with catnip - per the "Catnip" thread - sounded promising, but I
just ran a little test and our cat couldn't care less.

What I do when she scratches something she's not supposed to is pick
her up and place her in front of one of her scratching posts.  I
position her front paws on the scratching post.

It works.

With ours, that would be a ticket to the ER.

This thing doesn't have claws, it has *talons*.
