I am talking to my parents about getting a cat, I am not even sure if I am
getting one. If I do get one it will be an indoor cat because I don't want
fleas on me. My friend has had cats for around 16 years, (since before she
was born), and they have never gotten fleas EVER. I have been doing research
on cats and it says from what I read, an indoor cat can still get fleas. I
have a peeve about things like fleas getting on me. So is it true, and if so
can I do something to prevent fleas from coming on to my cat, me, and into my
house?

thjough anything is possible...
it's pretty rare for an indoor cat to get fleas...
certainly not enough to worry about.
btw: cat fleas *cannot* survive on humans anyway

Yes, Virginia, indoor cats can get fleas.
There are a plethora of products to get rid of them and some of them
even work.

Yes indoor cats can get fleas. It's possible for us to bring things in on
our shoes. My cat is indoors but it's still necessary to take precautions
against all parasites. When you get your kitty, talk with your vet about
the products they use. My cat gets revolution once a month. It not only
protects against fleas but other parasites that are harmful for your cat's
health.

Or in clothes. I once discovered that the chair I was sitting in in a
hospital waiting area was infested with fleas.
It wasn't an animal hospital either - the only animals that would have
been allowed would have been seeing-eye dogs.
Also, I don't think most people are aware of how prevalent rodents
are. Rats don't just stick to the bad parts of town and racoons and
other 'varmints' do quite well in urban areas and often nest in
people's homes without their knowledge.

And another surprising story, in a rental car. Last summer a friend
and I drove for a vacation and were bit up just driving in the car
we rented.
As for how a home without an outdoor animal in it can get fleas, I
used to rent an apartment and my cat at the time was an indoor cat.
I had neighbors on my floor with dogs that of course had to go
outdoors to do their business, go on walks, etc. Fleas can travel
between apartments as easily as roaches can. My apartment was
INFESTED with fleas one summer.

Depends on where you are I think... for me, the ones that came from a
farm had fleas when they got here but (a short bath later) never had
them again.

My indoor cat got fleas about three years ago in an apartment building.
After discussing it with the landlady, she told me the neighbors had
dogs who had a severe flea problem and the fleas probably came in thru
the heating ducts or tiny gaps in the walls between the two apartments.

You may end up using a flea product once every two years instead of once a
month. That would at least be a lower lifetime dosage.

If you live in the US, indoor is generally preferred. In many areas, it's
illegal to allow your cat outdoors unless it's on a harness and you're
holding the leash. If you have questions about something as simple as fleas,
you may want to do more reading about cats to find out what you're looking
at in terms of veterinarians in your area, vaccines for your cat, blood
testing, etc. Fleas are only the tip of the iceberg. If you have a shelter
or humane society nearby, the staff should be able to answer any of your
questions and let you know what to expect with your very first cat.

Our two never got fleas, but then they were pretty much always indoors, save
for the regular trips to the vet...other bugs would occasionally sneak in, but
they weren't interested in biting the cats or us (especially the crane flies
;).
