Made my own cat scratcher yesterday.

Wrapped a 30" x 9" plank of wood in carpet, hessian-side up and fixed it
with nails.

Left it in a corner and the cat LOVES it.
It's wide enough for him to stand on - anchoring it to the floor and long
enough for him to stretch his front legs out, while he desheaths his claws.
When he comes in, instead of trying to denude the furniture - he goes
straight over to it and claws seven bells out of the hessian.
He's always loved rough, woody textures and this is ideal.
Very cheap - very effective.

Having almost choked at the cost of shop bought ones, I glued & screwed a 3'
high 2"x3" length of timber to a baseboard of 6mm Ply which had a carpet
tile glued & stapled to it. I almost wet myself after I'd wound a length of
nylon rope (6mm dia) around the timber to create a ?25 NECESSITY for a
little under ?5.

I don't know what the cats like best about it, is it flicking & chasing the
pin pong ball that hangs by a thread from the top, trying/succeeding to tug
the threads from the carpet, sitting on top of it to watch cat TV (fish
tank), or lazily stretching their backs whilst dragging the full might of a
fully extended set of flick knives down the corrugated texture of the wound
rope?

And it's almost as well used as the furniture !

Good idea. I have heard before that cats like the carpet inside out best for
scratching on. Guess people put it regular side out just so it looks better
to them.

Well, sure looks better than a lacerated three-piece.

I can imagine that if the backing were hessian but I used shag pile carpet
with loops of wool. Anything that the cats can get the satisfaction of
pulling the threads out of should do.
