Our cat Harvey got his first (known of) kill today in his new
territory since moving house over 6 months ago.

A month back he attempted to catch some birds feeding in the back
garden, but his approach and stalking was all wrong and just plain
clumsy, we couldn't help but laugh as he prepared to charge on that
occasion.  The birds quickly got out of the way and flew on to the
garage and house roof were they proceeded to chirp and tweet away and
make fun of him sitting in the back garden "unamused".  He kept
looking up at them and making a funny stuttered miaowing noise.

At the time I was trying to remember that expression, what is it? He
who laughs last, laughs longest?

Last night he had snook out. We thought to go visit some of his female
cat friends.  He stayed out all night (the dirty stop out), but it
finally paid off! He came marching up the drive towards our back door
at 6 AM this morning bird-in-mouth and feathers protruding.  Of course
we wouldn't allow him inside to play with his catch, but he didn't
seem to mind about that, and promptly marched off tail high in air to
the front garden to play with his new trophy.  A little later about 7
AM, he was in the back garden with just a pair of birds legs coming
out his mouth, and marching proudly with his head held high.

He has been a very, very happy cat today.  It has been a long time
coming, but at last he got one! :)
