HELP! Cat Advice DESPERATELY Needed!

This past Saturday morning, my all-time favorite cat ran away from our
home. As of today (July 20) he has been gone over five full days.

I have NEVER experienced this before and I need to know what to expect.
I have not seen him since he left and I don't know whether or not to
give up on him.

I have heard so many opinions (he will come back, he won't come back,
etc.) that I would simply like to take an informal survey to get a
better idea of what MOST LIKELY will happen...and what I can DO!

PLEASE HELP ME! MY HEART IS TORN IN TWO.

HERE ARE THE FACTS:

He is a 2-1/2 year old male. He is neutered but still has his claws.

He does not have a collar or a microchip. I know--this is stupid, but I
really never thought I would need it with this cat because he is an
indoor cat.

He was born in my house and has lived here all of his life, along with
his brother and another male cat. ALL THREE CATS HAVE GOTTEN ALONG FINE
WITH NO PROBLEMS.

The lost cat was easily the most affectionate of our three cats.  He
followed my wife and me EVERYWHERE and would lay on us whenever we
watched TV or took a nap. He would even lick the hair on my head to
"give me a bath"!

The lost cat and his brother are both strictly indoor cats.  The other
male cat--not related to the two brother cats--is an indoor/outdoor
cat.

About six months ago, the lost cat started to try to get outside. He
would zoom to any door when he heard it open and would try to dash
outside. He has REALLY been obsessed with going outside. IS IT POSSIBLE
THAT HE JUST DIDN'T WANT TO BE WITH US ANY MORE?

A handful of times he has succeeded in getting outside, but was always
caught literally moments after escaping.

I had been putting the lost cat in our screened-in porch, which seemed
to satisfy his craving to wander, but I stopped doing that about a week
ago when he managed to push through one of the screens and was free for
a couple of hours before I was able to capture him again, lying on the
front porch of a house about four houses down from us.

This past Saturday morning, while we were both doing yard work, our
three-year-old son opened the patio door to come talk to us. The cat
slipped past him and we haven't seen him since.

I have gone door-to-door asking about my cat. The only thing I
discovered was that the cat had been in the back yard of a house that
is six houses down from us as of Saturday evening. Beyond that, nobody
has seen him.

I have put up flyers in my neighborhood, called all the vets in my part
of town, alerted the local humane society and put ads in a couple of
local papers.

I WANT OUR CAT BACK.  It is all I think about, and the worst part about
it is not knowing what our poor cat could be experiencing right now.

What has been YOUR experience when your indoor cat escaped?  Also,
PLEASE tell us what more we can do to help our kitty find his way home!

HOW FAR DO THEY ROAM? HOW LIKELY IS IT THAT THEY RETURN? I have a
thousand other questions, but I'll leave it at that for right now.

ALBERT, PLEASE COME HOME. WE LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU.

My heart goes out to you. As my other thread will show, I have no great
experience as a pet owner (so take my comments with a grain of salt),
but any human being can understand what you are going through.

First, don't assume the cat wanted to leave you. Most likely, as he
grew older, he was just curious about the world around. I think it is
our self-serving fantasy that any creature likes 24 hour
confinement---even if we have created a world where that is the safest
thing for them.

Second, just like children who wander too far out of curiosity, he
probably wants to come back but doesn't know how to. This is where his
indoor life may work against him. He doesn't know the world outside
your house.

You are doing the right thing in being very aggressive about searching
for him. Brainstorm some more and phone/flyer the places you haven't
thought of yet: churches, police, fire dept, dorms, etc.

By all means put a collar on your other cats and on this one too as
soon as you find him.

Good luck, my prayers are with you.

A.

I really feel for you, its dreadful when this happens- the worrying is one
of the worst parts, and you can't help imagining the worst.  Have you tried
putting a flyer in the local shop windows?  There is also local radio (if
they will permit).  Another suggestion is to try knocking on the doors of
houses behind/ in front of yours (ie. not just the adjacent neighbours) and
make sure you ask them to check their sheds or outhouses and garages).

What has proven successful for a few people I know is to wander out later in
the evening (after dark usually) when there is less general noise and
traffic.  Go out calling for your cat, stopping every few yards to listen
for any response back (a faint mew in the distance).  Because there is
usually much less noise pollution at night, the sound of your voice (and a
responsive mew) is much easier to detect from a greater distance.  You may
find this attracts a few other cats into the bargain, but if your cat is
still within the locality, within hearing distance (which for a cat is
farther than you expect), yet lost and disorientated, this may prove a
successful way of helping him find his way back. Also remember that higher
pitched sounds usually carry further than a low voice.

I sincerely wish you luck with your serach, and please let me know how it
goes.

And don't forget the packet of food you shake occasionally too.
I have a kitten which is allowed outside, but he takes his time coming back
in.
I have trained him to listen to the sound of catmint treats shaken in the
box - it works.

It is now the morning of July 23.  In a few hours it will be the
afternoon and it will be exactly one week since I saw my beloved little
cat.

My hope fades a little more every time I wake up.  At this point I just
want to let go of Albert, but for some reason, I just can't.  This is
really eating me up.  I just don't know what to do.

Looks to me like you've done all the right things. Don't give up, keep
checking the animal shelters and the pound daily. Keep asking neighbors.
Like someone else advised: go out in the evening and try to call your cat by
any name he responds to, stop and listen.

And, of course, don't forget to leave some dry food and water out. This may
bring strays to your door, but may as well help to bring your cat back.

I hope very much you will find your cat soon. Please keep us posted. Love to
all, - Maggie's Mom.

Check in neighbors garages. One of my cats got in the neighbors garage and
then climbed into the attic.  He was afraid to come out.  We heard a cat
crying as we walked around all the houses.  We found him after 5 days.
Best time to look is at night, they tend to hide during the day.  Chances
are the cat has not gone far. I've had cats that have been gone over 2 weeks
and they evidently come home....and these have been inside cats.  My doors
are secured and cat proof because the are quite clever at sneaking out.

The website has a lot of advice on searching for a lost indoor cat.
They state that your cat could very well be closeby, and hiding in
fear.  Suggestions are to search under porches, bushes--any hiding
place you think your cat may hide.  Also, these folks state that using
humane traps (the kind used to trap ferrals) often is very successful.

I didn't read the original post.  I had a cat that was gone for a few days.
One day I walked all around the neighborhood calling his name and when I got
home, he was on the back porch.  I think he was too scared to leave where he
was until he heard my voice.
