I have an indoor/outdoor cat (he has a cat door).

Recently I had to close the cat door and let him in and out manually because
of a racoon.

I am going away for 6 days next month, and was wondering whether I should
board him or lock him inside with a feeder and kitty litter.

If I board him there will be people around but he will be locked in a cage
(plus the transport hassle). If I leave him alone he have the whole house
but no peeps.

Opinions?

For a 4 day trip, I put out 3 litter boxes.  For a 6 day trip, I board her.
I'm not an expert.

We've got 3 cats--anytime we are gone for more than a day, we board at
the vets.  I'm always afraid that if I leave them at home, one will get
sick, and need a vet's care--and we would not be there to help.

Six days is too long for a cat to be alone and unattended. I've had a lot of
success with arranging for a trustworthy friend (who is also cat people) to
come in twice a day when I'm gone, to feed, water, and clean up litter
boxes. My four keep each other company while I'm gone, but they're still
happy to see my return. At the very least, board him while you're gone.
Never mind the hassle of getting him to the boarding kennel. It's a small
price to pay for peace of mind.

Even if we are only away overnight, we get the petsitter to pay a visit.
Some offer to visit as many times a day but we prefer once a day or if
we are away on really long trips, perhaps have her visit twice a day,
every other day

The cats don't feel alone, the litter box is cleaned, water refreshed,
girls fed and happy.

I also created a CD of my wife and I just talking and set it to play on
the CD/Alarm clock in bedroom, it is set to play approx our usual
bedtime.  Vet told me that if is a good idea to hear your voice every so
often... don't know if that works but we do it anyway.
