Cats and their balance

My first cat is just fully grown now at about 9 months and has adjusted
well to the house.  A few weeks ago I decided to get another kitten and
this one is only about a month old.  I'm concerned that if I let it go
free around the house that it might fall from the top of the stairs on
the ledge leading to the bedrooms. My other cat is just fine but this
one is only about 1 or 2 lbs max and I'm worried every time she walks
on the top of the stairs.  Should I be concerned since she's so small
or do they have an "instinct" that allows them to keep their balance
and not jump from the ledge.  Thanks for any help.

You should be concerned - block the way.
They can run up and down the stairs with about  8 wks.

just put something in the drop zone... eventually the cat *will* fall
off (their sense of balance isn't *quite* what they think it is), but
weighing only a pound or two it should be okay; nonetheless a cushion or
an upside-down cardboard box to break the fall wouldn't be a bad idea.

Where on earth did you get a month old kitten? That's four weeks. ANY kitten
should be with its mother long past four weeks. At four weeks, their balance
is crap, really. They're just starting to learn to do more than a fast walk
and just starting to try to climb. Unless you have carpet runners all the
way up the steps, the little thing shouldn't be able to make it up ANY of
your stairs, as jumping is usually beyond their abilities at four weeks.

Frankly, it doesn't have anything to do with balance. They don't know
enough, so half the time it's more falling than trying to jump.

It's actually two months old and goes up and down the stairs already.
It was a stray cat that was sleeping outside my grandmother's house
with an eye infection. I ended up taking it to the vet for a check up
and shots then decided to keep it.  I just put a gate on top of the
stairs so she won't go near the balcony.  When she gets a little bigger
I'll take it away.  Thanks for the suggestions.
